Well whilst checing over my engine new engine i was cheing over the clutch plunger and it looks like there is a problem with it...

Ill let the pics do the talking.

Pulled out as far as it will go using the arm:

Pushed in as far as it will go:

So as you can see the plunger seems to be sticking to far out, what could have caused this problem? and how would i go about fixing it?

Do you think someone has had the plunger arm off and put it back in the wrong way round?

Looks to me like the ball on the end of the arm is not in the hole in the plunger.

The ball is defonately in the plunger, Do you think someone has just fitted it backwards? Iv got a spare arm an plunger, so if i get the chance ill strip it down today and if i cant fix it. Is the plumger and bearing the same as pre-verto? if not ill have to swap the bearing over.

No its defonately not right, if you look at it you will see the adjustable bolts arent taking any effect whatever its travel, well i took the cover off today and has a look at the relise bearing and they wobble around like anything, so ill the plungerand press a new one in.

But if you look at the pic again, you can see the plunger isnt depressing all the way, so i dont know if there is going to be a problem with the clutch/flywheel... I would defonately think that it isnt fine as it is concidering the adjuster bolts just arent making any difference atall in whatever position its in... If anyone know different please say.

it looks fine to me; just like mine used to.

The release bearing is supposed to 'wobble about' this helps with clutch judder. Its only held on by a rubber o ring anyway. As for the nuts, well they only limit plunger travel - but you need to be pressing the pedal to get the full movement. Setting up to the reccomended gap ( think its 5mm but not sure) is described in the workshop manual.

fair enough still doesnt seem right to me though as when i remove the cover i can still only push the plunger in that far...

I know is a different clutch setup, but the pre-verto throw out nuts are alot closer to the clutch cover... ill have a look im my haynes and see, but the throw out nuts at the momnet are not doing a single thing, as they are no where near the clutch cover...

if it will only go in 'so' far it must be partially seized. Take it all apart and check. You need graphite grease to assemble it. not any other! as moly / lithium / copper grease all dry up and turn to clay (as I found out). I have a pot if you need a dollop.

Attached File  Mini_Project_010.jpg   963.54K   9 downloadsHi there,

After trawling the internet for advice on a problem I have, it was good to see that I'm not the only one with this very question. My car's now been off the road for 3 months nearly as it came to a sudden stop when I selected third gear coming onto a roundabout. Front wheels locked up and engine stalled. Initially couldn't even select neutral. I came to the conclusion either diff or gearbox has died. Yesterday I spent all day removing the engine and once out noticed that I could see the clutch plunger (before then you had about a 6mm gap between the housing and locking nut). Now exactly like the one originally posted. Now the engine is out, I'm guessing I need to strip the clutch which if it is the cause of the problem, should be cheaper than a new gearbox.....

If this is linked to what happened on the roundabout, thought I should share my experience to avoid it happening to someone else...It's not fun being stranded on the inside of a roundabout on the A45 !!!!

I'll be interested to hear if any one thinks there is a link and also what new parts I should buy. I've never taken a clutch apart before...

I've only just joinned this forum today, based mainly on the great advice I've seen.

Many thanks,
Jon.
