Hi all, jsut built a 1380 engine, all went together fine, it has brandnew pistons and rings.

Engine turned over when out of the car, obviously a little stiff due to new parts and no oil round the engine, ive come to start it and it just seams like the starter motor doesnt have enough power to turn the engine over fast enough,

Any tips anyone?

Cheers

EDIT: thought i better add Battery is fully charged and start motor is in fully working order

Have you primed the oil pump and turn the engine over a couple times with out the plugs in first to get oil round the engine and the pressure up first. also check your timing is set up right and the valves are opening at the right time.

check that the alternator turns freely
this happened on mine and i ended up destroying the belt because it kept slippin over the alternator pulley
also if you have a voltmeter check the resistance of the under bonnet earths
i found mine where iether sky high or had an open circuit(break in wire).

Make sure the battery is fully, fully charged, usualy freshly built engines have a lot of compression so can be difficult to turn over.

Paul.

hi..If its all new parts then it will take at least 500 miles of running in to be loose enough to spin as every thing is tight so do not over rev or labour in 3rd or 4th gear ................good luck runnung in.................. :P

Right,

The engine is primed yes, but i dont want to over do it and burn out my alternator or flatten my battery again.

Timing stuff is done following the haynes manual

Battery only jsut came off the charger

Earth strap is fine.

I might try bump starting it as that will turn the engine over a bit quicker, convinced this is the problem as it turns over REALLY REALLY slow

tryed it without the plugs with no change, gunan bump start it tommorrow, just dont think the starter motor has enough torque to turn the brand new engine over.

Will report back tommorrow eveneing!

i think there might be something else wrong then, as it should turn over very easily without the plugs in. sounds like soemthing is biding up somewhere.

when you built the engine did it turn over by hand easy every time you bolted the mains and big ends up?

EDIT forget that just reread the thread!!!

Have you tried a different starter??

been talking to some profeshional engine builders today and they have said that its fairly normal and a bump start then run in should sort it out,

Youve gota rember there is no oil around the engine lubricating everything and that its brand new bore, hone, pistons and piston rings, ive been told things are bound to be tight, the pistons were tight before even attaching the crank, i will report back after the bump start, will be tonight or tommorrow
