Hey, thought I'd put this in here as it's non mini.

Basically I have a gaping hole in my bulkhead that I need to weld up for the MOT. I haven't finished grinding it yet and I have a repair panel to weld in. Thing is I have only practised on scrap metal so I'm a bit cautious.

I realise you have to fully weld in a patch, however, does it need to be butt welded or will an overlap on to clean metal do?

I am going to try tacking it in and then using quick bursts so not to blow through.

Here's a pic of the affected area:

I would recommend cutting all the nasty metal out, then spray weld through zinc primer over any bare metal. then lay your repair panel in and seam weld it in place before grinding the welds and dressing it up.

there is no problem overlaying metal for mot, but deffo cut the nasty out first otherwise it will spread under your new panel and come back pretty fast.

Does the zinc primer pose any problems with welding as I've heard fumes can be toxic?

Thanks for reply

not if you let it dry etc before you start welding. it is branded as "weldthrough" so doens't hinder welding, but protects unpainte dmetal where you have cleaned it up.

to my knowledge most paint fumes are toxic to some degree

Just get a battry tray from your local parts place or ebay. It comes as a repair to cover the whole area with the battry tray already attached. just trim the bad off and put the replacement over the top.

Cheers phil, yeah that's the part I got although I don't think mine will look as good as yours as my welding is a bit of a shocker! Nevertheless it should get me through the MOT.

Will post a pic when done!

to me that looks fine and when it is all primed and painted it will look so much better and helpto hide any welds that you are not 100% happy as to their looks

just as a point a weld dosent have to look good to be a strong weld it is more important that it hold the metal together than how it looks
