1992 Cooper
Spi
91000mls

Standard apart form a DTM

Car runs and drives fine, pulls strong and no probs whatsoever.................

Apart from when i put my foot down or rev at a standstill there is BLACK smoke? The back of the car is covered in flecks of black deposits the same as that inside the bore of the DTM.

I have also noticed that my fuel economy is way down approx 40 miles to a tenner and thats driving "A" roads at 55mph!!

Any ideas most welcome

Cheers

Definately an overly rich mixture, I'm not sure of the cause, but I'm sure someone who knows will be along soon

Are all the vacuum pipes in good shape? Check the one running from the inlet manifold.

Would the tappets not being set correctly (even thought they are proper quite) account for 20 - 30 miles @ 50 mph "A "roads" to a tenner and shed loads of black smoke???? I have not done the tappets since I owned the car so at least three months.
