Despite being 27, I often get treated like an under 21 because I just came over from Australia, and trying to get any of the insurance companies to accept an Australian driving record or history is very difficult. My experience has been this: Direct Line charged my over £700 a year for my 35 and I had a £500 excess and then they wrote the car off after an accident and offered me £1000! I am currently waiting for adjudication from the ombudsman on that one, however I am never doing 'market value' insurance on a mini ever again.

On the other hand, it looks like I am going to take out insurance with Footman James, as they will give me agreed value cover, and a £100 excess, for £280 a year. The main reason for this is that they accept my Australian license (after all, I only had to send it in to Swansea and they sent me a UK license without me needing to do a test or anything). This is on a limited miles policy of 4500.

The moral of the story is that the really big companies with their phone drones couldn't be bothered competing with smaller specialists when there are complicating factors (such as driver nationality, classic car status etc.)

Maybe this will help someone else.

Cheers,

I found that Tesco were quite good. I'm 18 and they didn't gasp at the fact that i'd modified my mini. I paid just under a grand on my 998.

oh my god a grand!!!!!

Im with the AA. im 21 had my license taken away for medical reasons, so classed as a disqualified driver, even though ive got my license back. Fully comp with the AA for a 1978 mini 1000. costs me 245.69 a year!!! Only me on the policy!

Have to be born before 1983

I've been driving 1275s (a sprite and now an MPI cooper) since I was a 19 year-old student. That's just over ten years now, but the most I've ever paid was £650 after I lost my entire no claims due to my sprite being vandalised when I was a student. Shocked at the amount people seem to be getting quoted now - obviously my no claims / age is helping me more than I thought - now got the cooper insured Fully Comp, including commuting and driving other cars, plus my girlfriend and mum for under £350 with Elephant. I've never compromised on excess either - currently £160 IIRC.

Would suggest the following though:

Limited mileage (even dropping to 8000/year can help)
Pass Plus (I did it the year it came out, but lots of insurers seem to recognise it now)
Institute of Advanced Motorists course
Look into putting another person on the policy. A low risk person has sometimes dropped my premium a little.

The third option is only recognised by a few insurers, but you do get eligibility for IAM select insurance, which is usually quite competitive, and the course offer a discount for drivers under 25 (I think it's about £50 for the course and test - with a policeman in the passenger seat, gulp). Highly recommended anyway, for the price!

thats quite interesting. I rang up tescos to declare my modifications (stage 1, wheels, arches) on my 998 and they said i could not insure mods under 19. When i am 19 i can declare visual mods and 20 for performance mods. So i am currently driving a "standard" car looking for another car to get til im 19 and can start my own policy with HIC or someone similar.
