Got the engine out finally, didnt take too long......

However I need to get these pot joints off, tried the pry bar method but these buggers aint popping off for no-one!




The driveshafts will both need new gaitors on the 'inner' ends so can I leave these pot joints in and rebuild the driveshafts with new gaitors and fit back together?

Bascially does these joints HAVE to come off now for refitting and if so any tips as these aint budging.

no, they can stay on - unless you wanted to take them off for a more specific reason.

However i would definatly do them now as your engine is out of the car and that gives you the advantage!!!

Imagaine if in the future you need to get them off when the engine is in the car!!

They aint budging mate, the pry bar was bending way way WAY too much! If they dont need to come out I'll take the easier option!

I managed to do mine with two large screw drivers but your must be well and truely stuck. Have you tryed two bars one on either side of the joint as when i tryed with one bar one side of my joint it wouldnt budge.

Also there was a removal tool made by rover which is available but it costs like £15. But i was thinking maybe you could make your own?

Final thought have you tryed tapping the joint with a hammer while it has pressure on it to try and shock it off so to speak?

when i removed mine with the egnie inside the car a persuaded a chisel between the diff casing and the joint - as the chisel gets thicker it pushed the joint out.

but gentle persuasion with a hammer while under stress (pry bar) should see them pop out

If you want to take them off and replace driveshaft seals then use a pry bar and hammer give it a good whack and it should pop off! The straighter the angle the better.

Seals do not look like they are leaking though!

There not, I managed to 'pull' the driveshaft out of the pot joints but obviously the inner gaitors now have two big ass rip holes in them, so they gotta be replaced now anyway!

I've had a look for this Rover special tool to remove driveshafts but cant find any info, and the haynes aint exactly clear on this (to me anyway) where can you get them from?

Better to just persevere and do it your self especially as it would appear that the special tool looks like it does exactly the same thing as a chisel!!

Hammer and a drift, we did the one on Roofless in the car park at Gaydon!!!

There a spring clip on the shaft a good tap will unseat this and Bobs a not too distant relation of your mum!!

I thought the Rover special tool sits along the driveshaft, and you hit it towards the inner end?

i think you are confusing the pot joint removal tool with one used to get the driveshaft out of the pot joint the one you have seen in the manual is the latter one ,it engages in the grooves on the driveshaft and pushes against the inner part of the pot joint, i have found that trying to jemmy it off doesnt work as well as a shock loading ,this disengeges the circlip and allows removal .
I have made a tool similar to the mini spares item but without taper as the diff output casting is fairly fragile and easily damaged , the tool is fitted behind the pot joint and a packing piece goes between the tool and one of the both heads on the output casting ,its aukward to get it to stay there but i use gaffer tape , then get a copper mallet and give it a good belt towards the centre of the car ,the tool pivots on the packing and bolt head and your driveshaft is out ,never fails ,and no cracked output casting ( £ 75 each new ! )
