seen as i plan on doing quite alot on it i have decieded to make a thread of progress.

firstly the car... 1971 mini 1000 in black tulip, which is a dark purple. there wasnt many 1000's made in this colour so it will remain this colour, that means i will have to resist spraying it in my fav old english white with black roof as planned. the black tulip is actually really nice. the car is pretty solid but i do plan on having it looked at and rectified properly if needed. i reckon this will be where most of my money will go.

the plan... to build a stunning mk3 mini whilst keeping it looking within the era of what it should, i may drift along the way with new ideas lol, but hey... we all do right?

the engine... errr, not to sure yet but im thinking alone the lines of a fast road 998. i know there is much debate on tuning a 998 that will only see the power of a standard 1275... but my answer to this is...will it still drive the same and rev up the same?? i would have thought the tuned 998 will be much more sportier on the road and it can also give the surprise factor when you tell people you have a humble old 998 under the bonnet.

the body... im thinking along the lines of retaining no arches, 4.5x10 minilifes shod with A008 yoko's, stainless bumpers with overiders and corner bars, lowering it an inch or so all around. keep all the original badging, no cooper s logos etc. the paintwork will require a full respray in blacktulip with new panels where needed.

the interior... low back buckets in cream, biscuit carpets from newton commercial, cream door cards and gaitors from bert998. mota lita wooden style steering wheel. walnut door cappings and handles.

i think the spec needed would be as follows

998cc
flat top pistons
12g295 head shaved accordingly
balanced bottom end
lightened flywheel assembly
orange diaphram
duplex timing kit
rebuilt gearbox with hardened pin
kent 266 camshaft
rc40 system
hif38
k+n element

at the moment i have to tackle the roof guttering with a good tidy up as the paint is flakey. i ordered 3 cans of leyland black tulip celulose, g10 compound, panel wipe and some 1500 grit sandpaper. the sanding has begun already....

i was almost tempted to go for the wider wheels with arches but i keep telling myself to try something i havent done before and everytime i see an archless mini in real life i always wished mine was the same. i have to fit my s brakes and rear drums first though. as i have hardy spicer shafts i will need to remove the outer cv joints and replace for the bigger type ones for the s brakes, new hoses, then sort the tracking out after. it should look awesome after the ride height is adjusted too.
