Or do like I did and take the alternator to a good auto electricians. They'll be able to test it and determine whether it needs an overhaul with new brushes etc.

It'll cost you a fraction of the price for a new or exchange/reconditioned unit.

Hey all. I had a go at everything you advised but to no avail. Luckily i'm at a car show camping so i have been able to find an old alternator and fit it. Light came on as it should and with a push on the pedal it went off. I checked and the voltage was certainly going up to the level it should be. I did, as i said try all the tips you guys suggested. Thanks all of you for the tips. Now all i need to do is find a carb as mine is not working right... Mixture screw is threaded. Thanks again! Hopefully this thread will aid people in the future.
