I've managed to get my hands on a 80mm Jaeger rev counter and i need a little help with the wiring.

The counter:

has anyone any ideas?

The black wire has E written by it
The white wire is connected to the bulb
The blue wire has reo written by it
The brown wire was the only terminal that had only one wire on, so is this the coil wire?

any help welcome

i think the brown and blue replace the white and black wire that goes between the dizzy and the coil, not 100% though and the black will be the earth.

Normally I feel I can help with gauge issues. Not with this one though.

It appears you've gotten a "continental Jaeger" gauge... NOT a Smiths/Jaeger. These are totally different companies. If you know of any web sites devoted to French cars you might find you can get the information you need by posting there.

Cheers Taffy

I've seen this diagram before, i guess i'll have to wire it up and see what happens?

I thought there was only one coil wire? (see Taffy's diagram) a live, an earth and a bulb light....

Cheers anyway

I was hoping you'd know, i've seen some of your previous posts about rev counter wiring...

Thanks for posting anyway, i guess i'll have to give it a bit of trial and error, i mean what can go wrong? it'll work or i'll end up with a £10 dash ornament!!

Well... yes, you could let the white smoke out and turn this into a very pretty piece of junk.

As a minimum, write down the all words you can think of for power, earth, sense... Then go to one of the online language dictionary sites and see what the corresponding French words are. Perhaps the first letters of those words will correspond to what you find on your tach.

If you want to be more careful, check out the Simca, Renault, and Citroen club sites and perhaps post your picture there. I'm confident the answers you want are online somewhere. Please let us know what you find out for future reference.

Yes there is only one coil wire, the diagram just shows the 'green' wire running to a coil or alternatively to an ecu?

I've given this some more thought with regard for what could happen.

Take a look at the black wire with the "E" next to it. Determine if it really is an earth connection to the case. If it is... then you should be perfectly safe hooking up the blue and brown wires.

The way voltage sensing tachs work, you need an earth connection, a switched power connection, and a connection (typically) to the ignition coil's (-) terminal. (That's the coil terminal that has the wire going to the distributor). In normal operation, the coil (-) connection switches alternatively between 0V and +12V. So... the tach's sense circuit can safely be connected to earth or 12V. Likewise, the tach's switched power input connection can be at 0V without harm and obviously was designed with the intention of being at +12V. Therefore... IF the black wire really is for the earth connection, you can safely hook up the two other wires... one to switched power, the other to coil (-). If the tach doesn't work at first, switch the blue and brown wires and try again.

Once you've got this working, I suggest you take a paint marker or a scratch awl and mark the terminals with their function... earth, sense, +12V.

Let us know how it works out.
