i have tried to copy this, my enclosure is slightly bigger because i have wide arches that are part of the body, i am going to put an infinity 1050w sub in it, do i need to have a hole in the enclosure for air intake or w.e its for as iv noticed most normal enlosures have this hole, also what is the noise killer stuff, could i use something else is it available off ebay?

Hi

What you are talking about is a 'Bass reflex' or Ported enclosure. And like all speaker enclosures build on is something that cannot be guessed at.

Sealed or ported enclosures should always be built to the parameters of the speaker . Most Sub will be supplied with the correct size needed for a sealed enclosure and may even have designs for a ported one.
have a read :D

http://en.wikipedia....-box_enclosures

The noise killer stuff is just a spray on sound deadening materiel, they don't make it any more but this is sort of the same. http://www.deadening...1kg-single.html or you can just just use normal sound deadening sheets.

A ported box needs a larger internal volume and the port tuning to the frequency you would like it at.
You get more noise but less sound quality, ish.

The 1050 needs a sealed box of 0.75 cu. ft. which is just about the size you have available.

:)

Hi,

great idea for placement but how do you work out he size of enclosure needed for a sub?? Or does it not matter as lond as you have an enclosure ?

Graham

p.s., sorry if this is a daft question but am new to I.C.E !!

Most commonly the suggested sizes for ported / sealed enclosures are listed in the manufacturers spec.

The main thing is to provide suitable back pressure so the sub doesn't flap about wildly and pop itself.

Getting the size exactly right will give optimum results, especially with a ported box where the port should be tuned also.

They're all Mini-men here matey :D

At a maximum squeeze, you could get a 12" in there. 10" is a better fit though and won't encroach on the boot space as far.

But in terms of 'power' you can get mental powerful 12's (1k wrms+) if you have the cash. Unless you're keen on competing you can achieve ear ringing volume levels with minimal power.

I would say stick to a 10", 12" can be done in this location but it will strangle the out put due to the lack of capacity of the enclosure.
And again due to the small size I would keep power under 500 watts RMS anything more will be wasted.

The super high power small subs like JL W7 need big enclosures to work properly. Look at the size of the enclosure I used for a W7 in my S2000's system. http://imgur.com/a/Qm3WT?original#0
It had to be HUGE!

Ok, if you built an enclosure as shown in the first post but increased the didtance into the boot area to about the battery box, probably a couple of extra inches, it would increase the volume obviously. However the space will be quite an odd shape, being 2-3 " at the inner most point top to bottom, getting smallet to just the over arch bit.

Does the shape make a massive differece or is volume just volume nomatter the shape ???

Odd shapes are good in speaker enclosures as they help stop standing waves, which can reflect back to the rear of the speaker and create cancelation.
But an enclosures that went big > small > big would create problems as it starts to get in to 4th order band pass territory.

The enclosure you will end up with in that location in the mini will be fine and should work well. Just make it solid and use sounddeadening in the enclosure and the boot area in general.
