ahaa. dont worry mister, im not going to IMM ;)

Yeah, I'd say that too ;) :D (to be honest; I realy am a bit afraid...)

----------------------------------------------

Today I thought it's about the right weather to lift the engine.
Said - done. And it was NEVER ever that easy! :)

Thanks to the pulley, I could lift the engine with just 2 fingers (it's able to lift 2 tons :)).

Posted Image

And I found the perfect tool for removing the little splint from the gear rods:

Posted Image

Greased it up a little so it stuck in the splint. Didn't even need to jack the car up :)
Another trick I've recently learned is to remove the clutch cover whilst the engine is still in the car!
This enables the servo to stay just where it is, without touching it. The last two boöts can be undone when the engine is lifted a bit.

Tomorrow I'm going to split the gearbox from the engine. and then the adventure of my very first gearbox rebuild starts ;)

Cheers,
Jan

Engine split today... Clutch came off on first try. *Phew*.

And - surprisingly - my first suspicion turned out wrong.
Idler gear and castings are 100% spotless and look like new.
Didn't expect that, to be honest... Not on a 1275cc SPI engine...?

I somehow can't believe this engine had been runing 90.000km plus...!?

Next candidates: main shaft and laygear shaft and diff.

Jan

Well there is only one thing for it man!! Get a manifold made and have them as twins on you engine! That would be awesome.

I'm waiting for a third one to come to me :)
Can't stand the look of two differently shaped carbs :)

But hell yeah - that'll be awesome!
And I already spend the one or other thought about doing just that!

Jan

Mate that would be awesome! >_<

I think if you had twin fish on there I would make a journey over to germany just to see it!! By the way mate as you seem to get all these parts, if you come accross any 1 1/2" minnow fish carbs point them in my direction as I wouldn't mind buying another so I can run twins when I eventually get my 1071 built.

Haha - still waiting for a effing 1.1/8" socket to turn up to finaly remove the main shaft n bearing. Anything else is stripped, layshaft looks still solid (will be replaced anyways) but outputshafts have way too much play, thought. So I thing I found the source for the whining

So instead of stripping the gearbox I made some experiements with electrolytic rust removal.

My guinea pigs were a pair of early Mk1 demist vents. They are mado of steel and welded togehter. I like to fit them, because they don't dent the centre speedo's facings not as much as the later plastic vents do. Paint was stripped with some old brake fluid before electrolytic bath.

Before - during - after - finished.

And I trial fitted the new centre speedo pod. everything fits ok and looks good, thought. Facings will be remade as I broke one during removal :dontgetit:

Steel demister vents are also better than the plastic vents because they don't let air escape, the plastic ones are stapled together so they aren't very effective :dontgetit: not sure if you knew that or not, but hey!

How useful is that electrolytic bath? certainly does look like it does a good job!

Yes, that's another advantage :teehee: ( there's now parts from 1964 to 1998 on my Mini :dontgetit: )

It's quite effective. But I think you'r faster with mechanic removal (wire brush, sanding paper etc.).
But for a lazy a§§ like me it's quite cool >_< Put it in, wait a few hours and rub down any rust. The main adavantage is that you don't damage the surface (any further).

Still no socket... So violence had to do the job. And did quite well :D

Posted Image

Lower left corner: the two tools I used to drift out the main bearing.
A U shaped piece of aluminium and a piece of wood :shy:

Castings cleaned and drying in the sun...

Posted Image
Posted Image

Now: more cleaning, disasembling and reasembly. If the socket turns up tomorrow, it *maybe* is runing again by next week ^_^

It was far easyer than I've always thought it would be, to overhaul a gearbox.

Cheers,
Jan

Since my parents went to bavaria for week on holidays, I thought the best place to assemble the gearbox was the livingroom

And finished work for today:

Posted Image

What a bugger to get the retainers back on... Took me half the day... The other half I spend with cleaning everything - at least could do it on the terrace in the sun :closed:
