I guess in the worst case scenario you could just adjust the mixture for the test

It has a air-bleed screw for idel
More air - leaner mixture at idle. Should be easy

I'll have to keep my eye on this one, the engine sounds like its going to be great no matter which option you go for.

I love the grill surround on your car is it from an innocenti? Don't worry about your English, it is certainly better than my German! Keep up the good work.

Yeah, Innocenti B38 :)

I dearly hope I can fix it... It got damaged during the crash.
They are hard to find and effing expensive if in good nick... ;)

Today i striped an engine for an friend.
It's a ex-hillclimb Cooper 998 engine from Switzerland.
And after I seperated engine and gearbox, the big surprise:

Attached File  straightcut.jpg   200.91K   89 downloads

Now that's gearbox porn, isn't it? >_<
I didn't even know there was an SC gearset for remote boxes (12G1128)...

Sadly goes with me to Berllin next week to meet it's owner :)

Cheers,
Jan

Allright. Got a A+ gearbox and clutch housing for free, needs just some minor repairs like new synchro rings, bearings and the like.
Stil searching for a 1275 A+ primary and idler gear.
But I'm quite sure I can get one for a reasonable price ;)

I have it here next week. We went from Berlin back to where I live, and have the way down the Mercedes (W124) we had blew it's piston rings, spilling all of it's oil around and producing a gigantic cloud of smelly fog :dontgetit:
At the plus side we had the chance to explore the ancient secrets of Burglauern (hey! it can't be smal if it has a pizzaria and a CHURCH! :)) until the ADAC (same as RAC) sent the tow truck to bring us to the next service point.

We got a hired car free for 24h. At first they wanted to persuade us to take a BINI!!! :dontgetit:
Allright guys! A Bini for 10 persons? -> 5 persons plus the equivalent of another five of luggage :) :dontgetit:
So we finaly got a brand new Focus with less than 6500km on the clock. The Merc + some luggage + my gearbox will be sent to us next week.

Anyways, I got my final drive, it's a 3,21:1 I exchanged for a 3,44:1.

The bodywork will be done next week.
10 tons of tensile force should be enough to give back the front panel's original shape ^_^

Attached File  bums.jpg   165K   55 downloads

And I discovered, why my speedo broke down:

Attached File  tachowelle.JPG   52.02K   26 downloads
(It took ages to get that metal-grease-dirt mix of my hands :xxx: )

And whilst I'm need to put my hands on the peedo - I'm converting it to a single-instrument Mk1 look thing.
The other gauges will be - I'll see. Either I get rid of them or put them elsewhere.

Throttle linkage for the Reece carb is on it's way - thanks Nick!

The puzzle is getting larger! ^_^ Nice!

Cheers,
Jan

Today the Mini went to the doctor with his instruments of torture.
Came out quite well, left just some minor dents and the paint came off - but I don't care.
Now she has a war wound >_<

I'm so glad the action with the dozzer was a succes - things looked like it could've been a pretty bad dformation which can't be pulled out that good as it actually did.

It's not a perfect result - but a good one!
I can keep the 23 year old original panels :D

Cheers,
Jan

Trying to reassemble the gearbox today I found out that I need a new gearbox housing...
Looks like the bad luck continues :(

Attached File  futschikado.jpg   271.73K   35 downloads

I can't imagine how this can be done...?
However - stops my plans... Again

Either I get another gearbox, or I pull out the Mini's engine and overhaul the other gearbox.
But that means taking it off the road for quite some time...

I'm puking dice... :(

Cheers,
Jan

Little update.

The crappy box was an DAM2886. That's a very early A+ box. It has all the bif A+ bearings and the 11/16" main shaft.
But: all gears including the laygear are A-. Idler gears are A+.

It would've been possible to fit the laygear with the correct shims into a late/real A+ box (DAM5626).
The 1st motion shaft (DAM3092) fits to the A+ mainshaft (both for/with 18mm pilot bearing). But I would've needed the A+ mainshaft, cause without a considerable amount of alloy needs to be grinded of the box to fit an early A-/A+ mix type shaft.

If it would be still available, I would have fittet the 1275GT's DAM3167 1st motion shaft with the Cooper S 22A1040 laygear.
But unfortunately the DAM3167 is NLA.

But why all that trouble... Picked up a DAM5626 gearbox housing with all it's gears inside for a good price... So why bother with early A+/A- mix... stuff...? :proud:

The new as-new box:

Attached File  dam5626.jpg   143.02K   19 downloadsAttached File  dam5626_2.jpg   107.97K   15 downloads

The fully dissasebled early A+ gears are going into the storage, never know if you might can use them later.
And i tested my homemade idler gear puller with the scrap gearbox housing.

Attached File  lagerabzieher.jpg   91.09K   16 downloads

HS4 carb isolator, mainbearing stud, tie rod washer. Done. ;D
But need a good puller for the clutch housing bearing nevertheless - but still fun to try

And here's one reason why I prefer A+ stuff.
It's just a considerably stronger design in all matters, beginning with the idler gear bearing.

On top the smal A- bearing, underneath the bigger A+ bearing:

Attached File  a_vsaplus.jpg   101.49K   16 downloads

Another is with the crank's design; resp. the 'rolled' or 'filled radii'.
If you ever wondere what they are, here's a pic (A+ to the left, 850 A- to the right):

Attached File  filledradii.jpg   81.34K   22 downloads

Following David Vizard they help prevent the crank from breaking to a big extend.

That's it for now. Most parts are sourced.
Still lacking a primary and idler gear, but will find one for sure.
They'r not that rare...

This project is going to have a little sleep now, until I earned enough money to afford the machining of all those parts.
Parts are not that expensive - it's the good machinig you want for them that cost's a hell of a lot of moeny :D .

Thanks for reading!

Regards,
Jan
