Compared speedos today. First the old centre speedo, which does 800 turns per mile. I turned it with a akku drill. It read a little under 30km/h. Then gave the same rpm to the Triumph speedo - same result, reads just a little under 30km/h. Perfect!! I don't have to have it calibrated :w00t: :w00t: Well chuffed with that!

And the Innocenti fuel gauge is installed as well... But it still needs the guts from a 'Smith' fuel gauge... :D OR I buy a (expensive) Inno fuel tank. Or I get someone do do me some fancy electronic magic to keep the old smiths sender (doesn't work with a Jaeger gauge). Or... I get used to non working gauge :) We'll see...

Cheers,
Jan

So - smal update... I'm again having troubles with some parts (or beter getting them)...

And I had to dismantle the differantial again... I just put together eerything - and went to search for the - always missing :censored: - 13mm socket. And found: the securing roll pin for the diff pin...  - needles to say the brand new side cover gaskets fell to pieces. So some 60 miles and few hours later I finaly got two NOS gaskets and put the gearbox together. Again.

Posted Image

On my way I bought some high-tech sealant (Teroson Fluid) to seal the bypass conection in the cyl head. It's more of a glue than sealant and is coolant resistant and gets as hard as a stone. So should to the job.

Posted Image

After it hardened (took a few hours) I went to clean the block & head surface, the head studs and stud holes in the head, screwed the studs into the block - but wait... :D - two of them were badly bent... Annoying! So I'm waiting for two head studs to turn up - and still have not got a speedo drive :( (but am in contact with someone selling it).

Looks like my plan of having her running today somehow failed :genius: :( Dissaponting... And it's such a lovely weather for driving... (Instead of I had a little drive with my moms cabrio... But... It's not the same :) http://img16.imagesh.../7256/cabri.jpg )

And got bored and decided to give the piece between carb & airbox a little improvement. It's full of sharp edges. Dunno if that's the right way of doing it - but if you blow away dust in intake direction: now there's more dust to enter the carb intake opening :)

Many thanks! >_< Head studs arrive tomorrow or day after, we'll see...

And as I'm idling along, my brain filles with stupid ideas >_< What I never liked was the sharp and restricting bent the Cooper RSP snorkel makes. And if you take it off, the airbox draws the air directely from the hot radiator. I don't think it actually drwas in HOT air (there's too much air flowing under the bonnet(!), but I think it's at least warmer then on the clutch side (where all standard Minis get their air to breathe from, except some early 59 models).

So... I ended up with this:

Posted Image

Mind you - it's only photoshopped!! >_< This should improve it a little (I don't expect it to be actually noticeably) - and first of all: confuse people :-

I was a little afraid if there's enough space - but then realised it's the same with HS4 carb & stock 998cc airbox. and yepp, planty of room for all sorts of hoses on a HIF44.

Posted Image

Ho exactely I'm going to turn it... I'm keeping it to myself for the time being.

Cheers,
Jan

Could you not use a standard Mini airbox? They have a pickup on that side.

Or is it a case of too hard to get hold of over there?

Yes and no... On a std. box the inlet hole is too tiny, thought... With the Cooper/MG Metro's airbox you have an almost 4x(!) larger opening facing towards the airfilter which in turn means you get much more effective filter surface you can use in first instance... The air stream entering the box is larger spread and doesn't have to go long 'twisted' ways to enter 'round the filter. Sorry, I'm not good in explaining that in english - hope you get my idea anyways? :(

The best std. air filter case is, IMO the old MK1 one (made of metal).

David Vizard rates it as the best ever produced :) - but I don't like, as said, that it sucks air from the rad surface in a Mini enginebay with side mounted radiator...

You get burried under standard airboxes if you ask for one

So basicaly: I don't want to use a std. airbox

---------------------

Head studs arrived, head bolted to engine, valve clearances set - still no speedo gear  But I'm halfways on the verge to just plug the hole and use GPS or rev counter 'till I have a 16 teeth gear to drive a propper speedo... :)

Oh, and I had to remove the diff side cover for the third time - I misscalculated the thickness of required shims for the bearing's preload :D :) :) :)

Finaly looking like an engine again...

Posted Image

Rad has to come off for engine installment, it's just there to see if the fan clears the rad with the Cooper RSP's alloy spacer/new pump. It does. Some gramme rotating masses saved :(

And I can't get my hand round how to attach the LCB's suporting bracket... The only sensible position is to the fuel pump bolt!? :) Or with MUCH tension to one of the diff side cover bolts (but that can't be healthy for the LCB...)!? Hmmmm... *scratches head* - first time I install it :D

And: I had to turn the dizzy drive by 180° (good I noticed now - saved me probably some serious head sratching )

Ok, I made a quick comparison of the three airboxes.

Top: Cooper RSP/MG Metro
Middle: Standard Mini
Bottom: Mini Mark 1, HS4

I like the Mark One box because the 'buldge' on the bottom blocks the rubber lip of the filter element, allowing air only to reach the actual filter :D And if you look at the large opening in the RSP/MG box - I think it speaks for itself

Jan

I see what you mean about the opening size now, I've never seen inside a Cooper RSP airbox.

As for moving the inlet to the other side, would you be better off cutting the circular base out, rotating it to the correct angle and then putting it back together? I imagine that would be easier than moving the actual ducting around the filter housing.

You may have already thought of that though, just throwing it in there!

Yeah, somthing like this. I'll get a second RSP 'box to butcher with anyways :) And I certainly will do some underbonnet temperature measurments to see where there's warm/hot air, if ever (^_^)...

Still waiting for the speedo drive spindle. Should arrive by the middle of the week.

So I didn't do much (distributing the things left to do to one by a day :P), except finishing the carb.

Posted Image

I think it makes quite a difference :dontgetit: The spindle is not 'knife edged' yet, as I found it to be worn a bit (not as much to not using it), so thought I leave this out and do it once I need a new spindle anyways (next year, I suspect) - it's not worth the effort with something that get's replaced soon

My 'Vizarded' carb will also be ready in a couple of weeks hopefully, can't wait - you can tell the difference it'll make to the flow just by looking at it!

great stuff.
