well its looks like the elf is going now, so i will have more time to devote to this project again, it also looks like im going to supercharge it, as it appears the bmw mini eaton unit is coming my way with a little luck, so on top of everything else im going to plumb that in too! fortunatley, there is the option of having the drive for the blower to come off the opposite end of the engine via the heads dizzy drive hole which is blanked off, so the head will have a pulley and belt at both end now,

here is an old pic of the engine a while back, but the cam drive is taken up from the crank on the right hand side, and the dizzy blank is on the left of the head where you can just see a plate and one bolt in this pic. (wont load for some reason but im sure you can look back an old pic to see?)

i cant see a problem with doing it this way, although it will mean the gearing will need to be re-thought as the cam rotates at a different speed to the crank.

i need to get cracking with this if its going to get finished for next year (castle combe latest)

Cradley,,, for starters, just so you know the facts---> John kimmins at Specialist Components wasn`t the first to produce a BMW Kseries cyl head conversion mini engine,,, it was Greg Temkin in Canada, he did a small bore 8v with bike carbs,,, my engine was produced around the same time (we both didn`t have internet at that time so it`s difficult to work out exactly who was first, but who cares?) but mine was a big bore 16v with injection, my next engine was then the first turbo injected 16 big bore in the world

Not barking at you, just letting you know the facts --> JK at SC was very very late to produce his version compared the Gregs & mine, (literally years)

I admire your commitment, i respect what you`re doing, i think it`s great that people all over the world are really looking into different cyl heads for the mini now,,, that`s a good thing & well done to find somwething different

However, i`m not a big fan of the Valve shrouding, it`s not a very efficient design at all,,, but i`m definatley not saying that you shouldnt keep going with it,,, by all means it`s your baby & i reckon it`s worth having a play with anything that even remotely looks possible
The BMC factory produced various prototypes of over-head cam engines years & years ago (very early in the peace),,, there were many other firms doing similar things, you are just another playing with the same sort of idea & good on you

hope all goes well on it for you ...& yeah like you said --> "as i have said before i cannot see what difference it makes what the head is from?"

who really cares what the cyl head is off??? Seems that everyone here cares :D) To be honest with you , as you have said it`s not a common cyl head & looks to be as much trouble as many other cyl head conversions & not that i really care what car it`s from myself, (i have another cyl head conversion up my own sleave & it`s 20v ) so i`m notfussed what you`re is from) but there are plenty of people who are just keen to know stuff,,, i can`t see then stealing your idea if that`s what you`re worried about

anyways,,, good on you, keep up the good work & hope to see it on the rolling road dyno one day to see what it`s got
cheers
Matt

i had half expected a message from you guys over the other side of the plannet! i know what your saying, its not perfect by any means, but im sticking with it now anyway lol.

i have since decided to supercharge it, so its difficult to say what gains will really be had with the head alone, but with a blower on it as well im sure it will do the trick!

i'll keep you posted on the progress anyway in this thread,

my elf is selling as we speak on ebay, so that will free up the cash to get it finished i hope, im hoping its the 8 port thing more than the valves that are going to make the difference, well anyway fingers crossed!

20v sounds mental mate, i like the sound of it! get it done!

incedentally i have now bought a set of +0.40 pistons and the block and head are both at my local engine shop the block is being bored and honed to size, and is also being machined to accept the dowels from the head to help it locate, the head has been skimmed and looks great,

i will have some pics up next week to show you all, (assuming i can get them to load as the last few times a havnt managed to do it)

i have also had to change my rods to ones with a push fit little end, which i hope to pick up from guessworks

im still undecided on the alloy or steel spacer plate thing, i really want to avoid the 2x head gasket scenario if i can so really do want to do it in alloy, and weld it to the head face, i just think it will be a better job done that way, i have spoke to my materials supplier and they have somthing suitable for this, and have also spoke to another local compnay (alloy heat treatment) who we used to do work for at my old engineering firm about getting the plate heat treated before tig-ing it to the head.

anyway as i say pics next week with any luck!

well its been another slow couple of weeks, the block is still at the engine builders by me for boring and honing, and after 2 weeks they still havnt touched it, not having it around has not been good, i havnt even been thinking about it, part of me wishes i never started it, its going to take forever at this rate, i hoped to have at it by castle combe next year at the very latest, but at this pace thats looking unlikley!

i have got so many other things to get on with and spend my money on, grrrr so frustrating!

oh well fingers crossed there will be some progress soon......

no! there is an excellent engine builders down the road from me, they are usually very quick too, i did say to him no rush though lol. all the local garages use them for more invloved jobs, which aside from the boreing which is run of the mill stuff, the block needs doweling to locate the head, and that may take a little more fiddling....

willl all come out in the wash anyway!......

Hey good thread, shame it's mostly random guesses, (there aren't that many Japanese manufacturers guys).

I think this looks good, can see why you'd want to keep it quiet for now, but did you realise one of the photo's shows the manufacturers mark and gives the game away! I'll keep shush though! :)
