whilst at work the other day i was looking at a little japanese engine taken from a car that ended up being scrapped, i noticed the layout and comparatively small size of the unit and got my tape measure out to have a basic and very rough measure of the cylinder head.

the spark plugs are spaced the same as the 998cc a series engine, indicating that the bore centres are most likely to be the saem distance apart also (i will check this when i remove the head from the jap engine) as i never saw this engine run myslef, andmy friend couldnt recal much about it, i popped to a local garage whop had the same model car in to check the direction of rotation on the cam belt, fortuneatly it runs in the right direction, and the firing order is also the same as the a series. i also went to my local spares outlet to get a head gasket for the jap engine so i could lay it on top of my a series engine to check what lines up, and what doesnt, however, owing to this being a rare car they had nothing listed, so i have just got to remove the head and see for myself now.....

fingers crossed....

i will keep you all posted as to how it goes and to if at this next stage it still looks promising. i dont want to reveal the car/engine just yet, but its kinda rare, and certainly im sure it will have been overlooked by everyone previously who has looked into head swaps. im not looking for massive power, just a good increase, and its just an engineering project really.

what car of interest?

also get and headgasket from each of them and then you can do a comparitive of layouts, water jackets, oil ways etc

might be easier to dry deck the head and external oil feed and drain?

as i say mate i dont want to reveal just yet what car it is, and also i have said i tried to get the head gasket from the jap car, but no-where lists it, thats why im taking the head off the jap car. and i totally agree with dry decking it, the likely hood of water, and oil ways lining up is remote anyway.

i will let you know how it goes

no its not a micra head, the person your taking about that was trying that was me and my brother as it happens, we got so far and shelved the idea, it would have woprked but we started to need too much engineering work doing that we didnt have the tooling for ourselves, and that wasnt the point of the project.

as i said, its a rare car, not somthing you see alot of on the road, and you cant get parts for the bugger either as im starting to find out now, most parts places dont even list the car, in fact one dealership i spoke to over the weekend couldnt get me the head gasket either!

will keep you posted, should make some progress tomorrow.....
