just make sure you connect the wires up 180 degrees round too otherwise you won't have achieved anything by turning the dizzy round. (Remember that to rotor arm doesn't move when you turn it, you are effectively moving the position of the wires).

Right, thankyou. Would have made the boo boo that you have just stated if you hadn't of said it

if it helps, keep the wires attached to the dizzy and disconnect at the plugs (as they're marked) turn it 180 degrees and then hook them back up so that they aren't under any strain then give it a whirl

Remove dizzy and see if dizzy drive shaft is in correct possion....see diagram...........

Posted Image

once youve checked and repossitioned shaht if wrong................repeat what I said on page 2 and looking at your photos you have no: leads 1-2-2-1...........they should read 1-2-3-4 from rad end and leads on cap are 1-3-4-2 anticlockwise.........and when you have TDC at no: 1 and rockers are rocking this is firing stroke ...............good luck..... :dontgetit:

It sounds as your timming is out....this is what you have to do .....
1.....remove rocker cover and put it in 1st gear remove spark plugs and roll forward untill nos 1-2 valves at rad end are rocking this means your on a firing stroke .............
2.......remove dizzy cap and put a dot of white paint oppisite rotor arm, replace cap andslaken dizzy clamp bolt and turn dizzy intill no 1 lead is oppisite white dot......
3.........now retighten dizzy clamp and check lead order 1-3-4-2 in anticlockwise order.....
4...........replace rocker cover and spark plugs and you should be ready to start engine this is a an approx timing as you will need to use a strobe light to set it right.................
good luck..................... ;D

A local mini owner has said my timing may not be that far off, certainly not 180' as when we tried switching 4 for 1 and 3 for 2 it didnt like that one little bit!

Plans for him to look at it again today were called off, so I had another go myself. I turned the dizzy to 11 o clock and started turning it clockwise and eventually got to about 1 o clock where it seemed the most 'poppy'.

I took a video using my phone of my last attempt as you can hear the battery is going flat again.

s6zR3CrK01U

It pops quite a lot but thats it, even with a bit of throttle. I had better mention that the HIF38 is currently on there as the HIF44 I got is still in bits at the moment. I've checked there is fuel getting through by taking the pipe off the carb and cranking on the key, and also that fuel is getting into the head as the plugs are wet with petrol and also you can smell it coming through the plug hole. I tried earthing a plug to the head and found that the spark has gone white again now rather than the yellow coloured spark I had a few days ago. Obviously the battery needed the charge!

The dizzy is slanting slightly to the right as can be seen in this piuc.

Can anyone suggest anything else to try, or that I can check, or that I haven't done?

Is the spindle thing which the distributer is keyd into the right way?. I.e not 180 degrees out? one key is smaller than the other. I cant remember the way but it is in the haynes manual. That was the problem with mine and then i got a friend I know to come have a look and we got it started. had to advance and retard the distributer to get it to run well.

give that a go and see what happens

cheers luke

sorry just read the post above again, I also had to slightly move the spindle another knotch or 2 around from the 1 o'clock possition so i could get some more play on the distributer. try that aswell and see how that goes.

A huge thankyou to everyone who has helped me throughout my Mini's engine swap. All the questions that have been answered and all the help and advice that has been given has been much appreciated.

My new engine is finally going, its not spot on but will start on the key. The timing was about 90 degress.

Thankyou all!!!!! :)

I was a little premature in my minis engine transplant success.

I put the carb back together that I took apart because I thought it wasnt working. Bolted it back on, wired and piped it in. All good so far. I just tried to start it and it turned over! I was jumping for joy until the engine bay started smoking, I went for the keys but the engine didnt stop so I panicked and pulled the positive cable off the battery and it died (phew!!!)

Went back to the front to check out where the smoke was coming from, looked like the exhaust manifold pipes and to the touch they were scorching considering it was only running for about 15 seconds.

Whats wrong now?

Probably just got a bit of muck o the exhasut manifold, and yes they do heat up extremely quickly. Its excactly what happened with my engine transplant on the weekend, (spilled oil on manifold). If it is on the manifold just clean it off as best you can and let it burn off. Also make sure your newly rebuilt carb isnt leaking fuel onto your manifold. :D Glad to hear youve finally got it running though.

I havent done a search yet but will do once I've posted. I need help asap if anyone can diagnose it.

The engine is running sweet as a nut, although it does get a little hot which I'm told is normal. But the reason I cant kill the engine with the key is because suddenly the ignition is always on even if the key isnt in the barrel.

Can anyone offer some advice on sorting this out? I might be able to use my car this weekend if I can fix it >_<
