To fit 5/8" heater pipes you will need a later plastic cased heater, 5/8" hoses, a new valve and head outlet and an adaptor to connect back to the bottom hose. It's easy enough but the cost will add up. Maybe wait 'till you need to replace a component anyway, something like the heater core and then do it all together.
I'll agree with the above, the Mini needs its mechanical fan. There is no reason for any air to flow accross the rad with any force at any road speed and especially when stopped unless there is a fan pushing it. The mechanical fan does this far better than an electric one and moves a phenominal volume of air, more than a much larger electrical fan. It does a good job of cooling the engine and really doesn't use that much power.

which way round is it best to mount the leccy fan? pulling air from the rad or pushing air onto the rad? i assume taking air away to increase circulation, have people tried both ways of mounting
m1n1, i'm unsure weather my engine is an A or A+ is their an easy way to tell?
My fan is set to suck. you want a pic of how its mounted? You can tell if its an A+ by looking at how the distributor is clamped. the A+ is clamped with a black U type bracket with one bolt screwed into the block. On the origional 'A' the distributor has got a oval bracket with a nut and bolt in the middle to pull it together; and is located in a alloy tube that goes inside the block. Does that make sense?
