This might be totally obvious but I knocked the wire off the sender putting something in the boot...
(It wasn't loose or corroded and there was nothing wrong with any part - just my clumsiness)
You may be buying (?) from a person with zero knowledge or desire to look for themselves so it might be something simple as that before you get into the complexities
