What is getting altered on the pick-up then pete? Collapsible steering coloumn and.....?

Are you gonna have it on a Q then?

Alterations on the pickup are classified and if I tell you I would have to kill you!!!!!!! :dontgetit: And my missus is reading this as I type so can't let on how much it will cost :w00t: .

If you use standard mini parts in the way in which they were originally intended then they will pass an sva test because all the parts are type approved for road use. It's only when you alter parts that problems may occur.

As for a Q plate. Never. An 07 plate would look good :withstupid: .

Oh come on Pete. The idea of the forum is to help each other out and I'd like to go the legal route if at all possible. If you don't want it common knowledge could you send me a pm or something?

Sorry for hi-jacking your thread ed4ran.
The aim for the pickup is to rebuild using all new parts including modified fibreglass domino pup shell. This will allow me to register it as a brand new vehicle and therefore have an 07 plate(or whatever plate is available by the time I finish it). The z-cars kit will be re-used, but powder coated a different colour, and all other parts that I purchased new will be used as I have receipts for them(as long as I clean them a bit :withstupid: ). Z-cars front subframe and brake kit. The only used part will be the engine.
This is the same as we are doing for the minus and the owner has already ordered his own private 56 plate. Even though the shell is second hand we can still use it as long as we recondition it to as new standard. Which will be easy as the owner is a bodyshop man and the shells fibreglass so no rust.
Hope this answers your questions Al. The only other legal route is to take it for an sva test. Put your plate and chassis number on it and hope that they let you keep it rather than put it on a Q. I had a friend who built a cobra that they allowed this to happen but he did have a private plate on it. Or have one like Ade's that is already registered as a kit car so he can do what he wants to it. All conversions like this should have an sva but as I said before, most people will just mot them and hope nobody notices.

Back to ed4ran's project. Get it sva'd for your own peace of mind. It's not that hard if you get the book from dvla and read through it. If you can build a car like that then you can easily get it through an sva.

its nice to have some honest/Factual and helpfull information on the forum for a change instead of guesses etc and didnt believe you on the 07 plate pete ill admit i thought you were joking, seeing a new plate on an old mini will be odd

Edran have you made any more progress on this one? also what are your plans for the bodywork? cant remember you mentioning it previously?

Dont mind me pete, nice to know what needs doing!!
So if i got lots of new bits it could be registered on a new plate ;)

Small update:-

Back on wheels, and have run the brake pipes (dont worry P Clips on order),
engine is out of the front (rather high at the mo, but got some HiLos),
engine is in the back but head and manifolds arent attached yet (just on for looks),
With the engine in and the suspension compressed the roof was at bellybutton height!! :)
Have since adjusted the suspension so theres a few inch of clearence at the wheel arches.
Oh and have done the alternator mounts. :proud:

thats loooking awesome mate!

How are you going to do things like clutch and throttle? Are you thinking of a hydraulic clutch system with a Mini slave cylinder operating the Suzuki clutch? I'm thinking throttle shouldn't be a huge problem either....

By the looks of it your plans of being able to retain some semblance of a boot look to be going right too.

Can't wait to see more, keep it coming!

I'd like to know what you've thought about for cooling. I'm guessing rad in the front. Have you looked into what bleed valves you'll need and where to make sure you don't get air in the system? How you running the water from one end of the car to the other?

Yes Hydrolic clutch using a mini slave cylinder,
The mini SPI accelerator cable fits nicely, only the barrel on the end could be bigger so i may get one made but alot longer (like 4m), or may extend 2 myself with some brackets.

For now the exhaust will be a backbox i got off of ebay for £1 (Brand New)
hopefully it wont be too loud :proud:
Drive shafts should be soon, before i start putting any more into the car so i still have reasonable access.

As for cooling ive got a metro rad to start with and ill see how well that performs otherwise ill be increasing its size or maybe just doubling,
as the metro rad doesnt have a filler i need an expansion tank that has one built in then i can locate it in the engine bay next to where the water comes out of the engine at its hightest point so it should remove all/most air bubbles. Or i may find som little valves so i can bleed the air either way it should work.
My brother found a company (saw one of their vans) thats a few miles away the is an metal stockest (everything except mild steel)
and they do aluminium pipe in 5m lengths so im gonna get one of those.
Of course they will be run down the exhaust tunnel.

Its just a standard back box (from a fiesta) and it will either be off to the right of almost center. Ive got the swift manifold and middle pipes so im cutting it up and welding the lot together, will be changing it to stainless later when i sort the engine.
