Hi All
I'm going to replace the engine part of the old girl, leaving my current crisp action gearbox.
Although I'm going to use the haynes manual, does anybody have any useful tips to do this- ?are there any bits in the haynes which don't really work?
any suggestions gratefully received.
cheers colin

Just be patient when removing the flywheel housing and gearbox from the engine. If they are a bit stuck there is a temptation to hit it with a big hammer or jam a screwdriver or chisel in the joint - it's all too easy to damage the alloy housings.

Many ice cream tubs are handy.

Also means you can eat a load.

when you have the flywheel off and are ready to split the box from the block , just roll it onto the diff side of the engine and the weight should crack the seal and then you just have to lift it off.

If the box is stuck to the engine, ensure all the bolts and nuts are out then hoist it a fraction of the ground (1/2"), make sure there's something soft underneath, then tap all around the joind with a rubber mallet or use a block of wood and a hammer. Once it starts splitting, hoist it a tad higher and repeat. You can also use a wooden wedge to help split it. Don't be tempted to use a big screwdriver to prise it apart.

Good luck!

soft rubber mallet. few taps around the transfer casing, clutch wok, gearbox to block join and it will all come apart no bother.

Never had a stuck one yet, gentle tap here and there and just pull it off.

use a small jimmy bar and insert it between box and block where transfer gears would be and prise apart................ :)

get an engine stand and then you can turn it upside down a lift the box off....

but easiest way, leave connected to hoist after you've remove from engine, when all the bolts are un-done just life the block up and tap the box....

Oh yeah, and if you're taking the flywheel off when it's out of the car.....mind your toes! :)

As said above, I'd also recommend changing the clutch and all relevant components (thrust bearing, plunger, arm, and flexible hose to the slave cylinder (use a braided one), etc) unless they're all relatively new. It may be a bit more expense right now, but in my opinion it's worth it for the luxury of changing it out of the car.

make sure you undo the crank pulley bolt when you've locked your flywheel! its not easy locking an engine without damaging anything when your flywheel is off!

Hmm well if you got a air tools gun it aint a problem :dontgetit: normally ;-p

but there is a nice split in the end of the crand on the fly wheel end so if you have trouble locking it off get the fly wheel off and use a nice bit flat implement to jam it :withstupid::)

nice and professional hehehe

But you don't need to undo the crank pully bolt to remove the box from the block...

no but he may want to take advantage of doing the timing chain and oil seal with the luxury of the engine being out ?

or evan changing the cam hehe...
