Been a while, been mad busy with the house, the Mini and work, as well as forums, and organising a dyno shoot out.

So, here it is. Its not running right in the vid, infact its running on three cylinders because one of the injector drivers failed in the ECU. That, I am fixing tonight.

Its nearly there, and hopefully next sunday I can go for a drive =]

out of intrest. How much is this costing and how much power are you hoping ? Cheers. I ve seen on specialist conponents site they want 7k for a head conver. But may as well go for a watsons conver for that price.
Rich- looks sex tho lol

Sprocket, I've just hooked up to this conversion and that looks awesome. My Mini is running a 1293 A series with standard mods, single 40 Weber etc. it made 90bhp but does still not set the heather alight. This swap looks tremendous. On what I've read around 125bhp looks acheivable from a 1275 which should rev and pull much better than the 5 port engine.

Can I ask you if you are using the SC build manual? I've been on their site but £2700+ is a bit out of my budget. Do you think this could be done a lot cheaper by 'DIY' methods. I don't mean do the maching myself but is there sufficient detail in the manual instructions with cam pulley Pt No's etc?

I think the SC cam pulley kit looks very good but is very expensive, as is the components like the metallic head gasket.

Does the block definitely require to be offset bored (outer 2 cylinders?) and what does this mean to the crank?

I would assume the 16v head is the one to go for, is this the K100RS bike? Will the head require new valves, seals etc as I beleive these things can happily do a bit of mileage?

Lastly, injection or carbs? I assume injection needs a custom ECU (again not cheap) or can the carbs be set up and run quite easily?

Hope you can help and good luck, you're doing a brilliant job. I think it's a great conversion with no significant front end body mods.

Sprock - apologies for thread hi-jack!

regards pricing - the figure of £7k would be a full race spec engine ready to fit to the car complete with ecu/loom etc - you'd be pushed to get a 130bhp 5 port for that amount from a race engine builder and only a small amount of people go for this option as its rather extreme for the road.

The £2700 is a price for a wheelbarrow load of stuff to let you get on and build the engine, includes ecu/loom/ancills/machining etc - it depends how much you value your time. Its taken most diy builders between 6 months and 2+years to get their engines together. It takes me 3 days for an engine and gearbox build and assemble using our kits and parts, its horses for courses.

I reckon if you could do all the welding/machining yourself and buy an 8v bike, break it, sell the old parts off, use our conversion kit, put bike carbs on and a dizzy to a "fit" 1275 not needing a rebuild you'll get nearly 110bhp for under a grand thats the other end of the scale.

Spock - get it motoring fella - I have some ram pipes by the way if you need any

Cheers

JK

Personally I think the kit is VERY reasonably priced. I know how long it takes to make the parts, and the cost of the kits far outweighs the time in labour it takes to make one. The conversion can be done on a reasonable budget, all depends on what parts you can re-use from your current engine.

Offset boring isn't necessary, Sprocket is just a fussy bar-steward. Lol

Top marks for effort and attention to detail.

This is all my own work, with help and ideas from others.

JohnK has pretty much covered pricing side of it, the DIY option is by no means easy, but it does allow you to work in some different aspects. As matty has said, offset boring is not required, and there are a fair few of these engines that have not been offset bored.

Most of these builds are 1293 or 1380, I was just being a fussy bar steward (thanks Matty) sticking with 1275, but that allowed me to offset bore and still be able to use a standard A series head gastket.

Its up to you which head you use, 8v or 16v. If you are after the 16v and some racey cams then the K100 RS 4valve or the K1200RS heads are the ones to look out for, there are more of the K1100 LT or K1100RS heads around though and easier to come by, the Pukka RS heads demand a higher sale price as you would expect

As for carbs or injection, I'd say injection every time as its far easier to set up, will stay in tune and give you better results. >_< programable ECUs these days are not expensive, and there are plenty to choose from
