I think you mean UNF & UNC. AF just means 'across flats' and tells you what size spanner you need.

Namrick seem popular - you may find there's a fastenings supplier close to you.

There's all sorts out there... but what you need to be careful of is to get bolts (screws) of the right length for the application...

No point getting a box of 5/16" UNF screws and them all being 2" long

UNC - Course... generall used in soft metals ( like ali' )

UNF - Fine... use in hard stuff... steel / iron

You will use a mixture of both depending on what you're doing... but if you're not touching the engine, then most will be UNF

We're here to share knowledge so you should feel free to ask,

UNF for fine - UNC for course.

Both are used on Minis, nuts 'n bolts are UNF. Coarse threads are used on holes tapped into castings, especially aluminium components.

Its so easy when you know. Thanks guys, thats my learns for the day.

top banana. :(

Sooooo, how do i work out the size on say a Nut? Ive got a Nut from the front end of a tie-bar for example, which fits a 11/16 AF spaner. Would that make it a 11/16 NUF nut size?

I noticed you are in Somerset, if you are close to Weston Super Mare, there is a superb store called Nuts and bolts that do every one you could possibly need, quite reasonable price wise too. Put a link to their new website below

Nuts and bolts

Threads are sized by the clearance hole, so put your (open ended) spanner round the threads, not the nut, the smallest size that will go round the threads is the size.

a 1/2" headed plain bolt is 5/16ths for example.
