I declared my Mini SORN around 8 years ago, with grand plans of a turbo conversion. 8 years later the reality is I've got a rotting shell sat in my garage with no engine. The time has now come to say goodbye to make some space.

The thing is I have not heard anything from the DVLA regarding the car since it was declared SORN. I understand that I should have renewed the SORN declaration every year, is that correct?

I still have the old V5 but have not been sent a new style one. Have they just forgot about my Mini?

If I alert the DVLA to the existence of this car, either by selling with the V5 or asking for a new V5 will I get a big big fine for not declaring it SORNed every year?

I'd rather sell it with a V5 in the hope that my beloved numberplate and Mini will not be parted.

IIRC Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) was introduced on 31 January 1998 so if you declared your car SORN after that date then yes you should have been declaring it every year!

if you write to your local DVLA office stating " the car has not been on the public road between **/**/2000 till now" they will remove the fine and update their records, you will be back dated for tax for seven years and given a £40 fine if you don't write to them.

My project has been sorn'd for 4 years, at the start I just sent a letter to the DVLA explaining that the car wont be on the road for a number of years. Think they wrote back to say it was ok and I haven't had to declare it since.

I forgot to re sorn mine this january and got a fine of £80 for the privelige. It doesnt help when you have to wait until the 15 days after the turn of the month though, if you could sorn the same as taxing it would be a lot easier.......like I wouldn't forget.

Hey, i'm in the same situation as you. Mine has been off the road since 2000, and i was never sent a new style log book or either received road tax information through the post.

The thing is, I have had no correspondence with the DVLA what so ever regarding this car (notifications, fines etc), now I know that they are not legally obliged to send reminders, but it leads me to believe that my car has simply fallen off their radar. Would I be creating problems for myself if I brought it to their attention. I suppose if I want to sell it with the V5 I will have no option though.

Think I'll give them a call at lunch time and ask them how they would deal with this 'hypothetical' situation ;)

Are you not getting it in the neck from the missus or mom yet. I've finally caved in to my moms 8 years of nagging.

Think I'll give that a miss, may remind them of it's existence before I've checked out where I stand.

Searched for my Mom's old Cooper though.

My Jason was SORN when i bought him and I assumed he was still Sorn'd until march this year. When i went to tax him online I was informed that there would be a fine for not declaring him SORN. Turns out if the vehicle changes hands it needs to be re-SORN'd. I was planning to fight the fine by pointing out that they hadn't bothered to send me a reminder with the V5, but I never received the fine........

For the benefit of anyone else reading this in my position 'm1n1'. I just spoke with the DVLA in Swansea and they confirmed I have not been sent a new style log book or any reminders. They will send me a new log book out tonight and I'm in no trouble ;)

As E1100T said I will have to write them a short letter to confirm this though, so fingers crossed I'm in the clear. Oh and I will have to declare it SORN as of this month.

it is also worth pointing out that you cant declare a car sorn unless it is registered to you.I bought one recently that had not been sorned and when i sent off the v5 i also posted the sorn in the same envelope. They sent it back and said you cant sorn it until you receive the new v5.5 weeks passed until i got the v5 and then i sorned it.It also told me i would get a fine but after talking to the dvla it seems this is a known glitch in their new system and all calls of this nature were being rectified but no fine would be issued.I have now bought another one which is not sorned, dont suppose they can do anything until i register it to me,other than fine the previous owner who hadnt sorned it.
