Hi,

subframe came up well, is that just wire brush work or some sort of cleaner too?? Also what are you doing brakes wise if the 8.4's aren't going back on??

Graham

Combination of a bit of wire wool, wire brush, grinder with a wire wheel and a wire brush in the drill. I'm going to use some degreaser on it today to finish it off before I kurust the nasty bits.

Since it was a looooong time ago, I'll forgive you :):

They won't be staying that colour though >_<.

Here is todays stuff:

Posted Image
Subframe ready for degreasing.

Posted Image
Degreaser applied.

Posted Image
Pressure washed off.

Posted Image
Reapplied seam sealer where it was damaged by welding.

Posted Image
And the other side.

Posted Image
Etch primed the subframe. I did kurust it also, but I forgot to take pictures.

Posted Image
Rubbed down and wiped down ready for another primer coat.

Posted Image
Primer applied.

Posted Image
Good coverage under the wings.

Posted Image
Subframe got the same treatment.

Posted Image
How I left it for the day.

Going to go round again tomorrow and get the top coat put on. Will no doubt start work on some other bits and bobs while I'm there too.

Thanks for looking >_<.

Hi,

take it you are spraying your red oxide, (if it is ) ?? Have you a compressor or electric spray gun or is it just loads of rattle cans??

Looking good though.

Graham

ps, 1 in the morning posting !! you need to lay off the red bull, lol !!

It is indeed red oxide, get it from Focus. I'm using a spray gun and a compressor.

Hey, I got back from the garage at 9:30PM yesterday! It'll do that to you >_<.

I wanted to get the stuff I primed yesterday in top coat today but the primer wasn't quite dry on the bulkhead so I left it for now. I did sort out the subframe though.

Posted Image
Primer rubbed down.

Posted Image
Wiped down ready for paint.

Posted Image
Painted.

I started to work on the steering rack but didn't get very far. The gaitors are split, but I already bought new ones. I was going to renew the track rod ends but looking at them, they still have alot of their original paint on them, they don't have any slop in them and the rubbers are fine so they can stay. I do need to work on getting them off though so I can replace the gaitors and refurb the rack.

Won't be any work tomorrow as I'm going to a workshop at Uni.

Thanks for looking :errr:.

Made some progress the last few days:

Posted Image
These are the pins from the upper arms, neither are great so I'll probably rebuild both arms.

Posted Image
Cleaned down of all rust.

Posted Image
I didn't want kurust getting in to the shaft and making the bearings harder to remove so I masked them up.

Posted Image
Kurusted them and you can see the steering rack in the background too.

Posted Image
Bulkhead ready for paint.

Posted Image
Painted bulkhead.

Posted Image
Driver side inner wing.

Posted Image
Passenger side inner wing.

Posted Image
Underneath.

Posted Image
The other side.

Posted Image
Remainder of the subframe.

As you can see, there are a few harder to reach areas that I've missed so I'll probably do some touch ups on it when I do the interior floor and boot.

Thanks for looking .

I need to take off some surface rust off my rear subframe for MOT + piece of mind.

What did you do exactly

Your removed it
Degreased + hosed
Kurusted - just paint it on and leave it????
etch primed
primered
then painted with what??

You are a pro! So I thought I would ask :) thank you!!!!

Yeah that's it pretty much, the paint I used is Rustoleum.

You could have it sand blasted and powder coated for ease if you liked though.

Is sandblasting and powdercoating as good? Surely its easily scatched?

It's more robust. But once it's cracked, it's buggered as stuff can get under it.

It's alot harder to damage than paint though. Rustoleum is pretty hardy once it's dry but it does take a while to dry properly.
