It's getting closer! Looks good, I've watched this from the start and although it's taken a couple of years the quality of the repairs really looks spot on. It should last a long time. :(

Thanks Austin!

It wouldn't have taken so long if it wasn't for University and girlfriends haha. Oh well, life is for living!

I do really hope you're right and it lasts me a good few years before I need to do any additional bodywork, should do though :(.

While I'm here, I just want to say thankyou to Mini Spares, they supplied me with the replacement bumper lip completely free of charge. Another thankyou to Simon for making that happen and for just generally being a great help to me. Don't put your feet up yet though Simon, still a ways to go :).

Been to the garage today:

Posted Image
Bumper lip now held in the correct place ready for welding.

Posted Image
Turned my attention to the front subframe.

Posted Image
Removed the passenger side split pin and got the breaker bar on there.

Posted Image
Came off with minimal effort.

The other side was a different story. I couldn't find anyway to hold it solid enough to undo it so:

Posted Image
Dropped the body back on to the frame.

Posted Image
Came off a treat then.

Posted Image
Got the body back up and supported.

Posted Image
Started taking the passenger side running gear to bits.

Posted Image
Driveshaft whipped out.

Posted Image
Didn't get chance to start on the other side.

Posted Image
Frame looking a bit more bare. Needs a bit more work yet though.

Welding wire arrived today while I was out so there will be some proper progress tomorrow.

Thanks for looking .

Looking so good man!

It's getting there, slowly but surely.

I just hope it's not too slow for MITP!

My life now has such little meaning that I sat down with a flask full of tea at 9pm and have just finished reading your thread. Some awesome work went on, very impressive gearbox rebuild, too. Keep at it because it'll be real worth it in the end

Bedtime. :-

So much info! Cannot wait for updates!

Thanks for the kind words you guys. Really glad you enjoyed reading through :).

Here's todays stuff:

Posted Image
Started to get the bumper lip welded in place.

Posted Image
Getting there.

Posted Image
All welded up.

I also took this oppertunity to add a few more slugs of weld in a few places that I felt needed it. On the rear of the a-panels and on the wing to front panel seams.

Posted Image
Welds ground back and cleaned up.

Posted Image
Overall view.

When I was inspecting my new camber brackets before I started to prep them for paint I noticed there was a random blob of weld on one of them which would stop it sitting against the rear subframe correctly.

Posted Image
The offending blob of weld.

Posted Image
Ground off and linished smooth.

Still trying to finalise another Mini Spares order for the bits I need to rebuild the front subframe. I also need to order some high temperature paint for the Cooper S calipers.

Thanks for looking, should be more updates tomorrow :gimme:.

Hey Graham lets be honest - we'll never catch him up!! He is our inspiration and our master!!! Great to see this moving along. Thanks again Deathrow for making this information available to us. I used to read your post anonymously thinking I could never do that! I was just so impressed. That sounds bad - still am most impressed!! Keep up the great work.

Cheers Hugh, but I wouldn't call me a master! The work of others on this forum is always what inspires me to have a go and then better my work :).

Been to the garage the past few days but it seems I'm putting alot of effort in and not really getting anywhere :). I'm hoping I can make a change to that pattern tomorrow and get some proper work done.

Anyway, here are the pictures:

Posted Image
Got the holes drilled for the front plate. It looks wonky because the holes in the plate were drilled in the wrong place by whoever fitted it before me. I'll replace it at some point.

Posted Image
Had to grind a bit of metal away here in order to provide clearance for the spot brackets on my grille.

Posted Image
Om nom nom.

Posted Image
The mounting holes for the grille didn't quite tally with each other and they were slightly to one side. So welded them up.

Posted Image
Neatly.

Posted Image
Dressed the weld.

Posted Image
Redrilled the holes where they should have been (I was probably just being picky, but I'm like that!).

I then set about stripping the remainder of the front subframe down.

Posted Image
Bottom arm bushes were seized on the shaft so I had to cut the end of the bush and persuade the arm off the rubber instead.

Posted Image
Those sleeves are going to be a joy to remove.

Then I began dismantling the other hub and found...

Posted Image
Great. I'm relatively sure that means this CV is scrap. £30.

Posted Image
And the other side. Super, that's £60 then and I imagine I'll need to do both sets of bearings too, £160 :D.

Just when you think you've replaced every part imaginable, she throws more scrap at me. I'll be asking in technical about those shafts and if they're reusable. I'll pull the bearings as soon as my new punch set shows up and check them out.

Thanks for looking :D.

unlucky on the parts mate :) good progress though!

These things happen ;). Oh well!

Here's todays stuff:

Posted Image
Cleaned these seams up a bit more.

Posted Image
Checked that the seam covers still fit.

Posted Image
Protected until I'm ready to paint.

While cleaning up the seams I had to do a bit of welding here and there so some of the seam sealer got burnt.

Posted Image
Dug out and primed.

Posted Image
Same on the other side.

Then I started work cleaning up the front subframe.

Posted Image
Underside before.

Posted Image
Underside after.

Posted Image
Front before.

Posted Image
Front after.

Posted Image
Back before.

Posted Image
Back after.

Posted Image
Ready to be degreased.

I was trying to degrease it by wiping it all down with white spirit but it's just too complex a shape to get at it all. I'm going to go and buy a tin of gunk tomorrow and go to town on it then I'll pressure wash it and dry it with an air line.

Posted Image
Started stripping down the driver side hub.

Posted Image
Brakes off.

Posted Image
The old setup, won't be going back on.

Tomorrow I'm going to work towards getting the subframe cleaned and in primer as well as re-priming under the front wings and the engine bay.

Thanks for looking :-.

Hi,

subframe came up well, is that just wire brush work or some sort of cleaner too?? Also what are you doing brakes wise if the 8.4's aren't going back on??

Graham
