how well held on are those plates! we just took one off mine, about 5 spotwelds and some seam welding at the edge, all filled with rust... >_<

Oh I know! They're a nightmare!

If there is one thing I don't like doing, it's laying on my back holding a grinder above me :)

I know the feeling, as they have a tendency to fight back.

i tipped mine over, easy grinding and welding that way!

Not enough room in my little old garage :).

Oh well, nearly all done now!

I'm crossing my fingers for my welder part to come tomorrow, if it does, I shall head down to the garage and crack on :dontgetit:.

Righto, heres Saturdays update, this is the first time I've had chance to post.

Before I start though, I just want to say a big thanks to Steve at Weldequip, great guy to deal with and just excellent customer service in general!

Posted Image
Welder back in action.

Posted Image
Mmm, grotty.

Posted Image
Chopped out.

Posted Image
Card template made and copied on to steel.

Posted Image
Red oxided remaining steel and inside.

Posted Image
Patch cut out, shaped and primed.

Posted Image
I started welding in the patch on the other side, but it's been that long that my welding was awful, so no pictures. Will sort it out properly next time.

Once those two patches are seamed in and ground back I'll be dropping her back on to the rear subframe so I can jack up each side in turn to weld the sills on, then that's the welding done :).

Thanks for looking :P.

It's been a while but I've started working on Elliot again.

Got this bit done today:

Posted Image
Got boot ready for the reinforcing brackets.

Posted Image
While the weld through primer was drying I started cleaning up the old tank bracket.

Posted Image
Got both brackets fully welded in.

Posted Image
Another angle.

Should be more tomorrow!

Great to see you back Deathrow. Yours post was the first inspiration to get me started on my Mini. It made me think that maybe I could actually give it a go. Took me days to read through at first. Keep up the good work. All the photos of each stage of welding is very very helpful - so thanks!

Hugh

I'm glad I could inspire you Hugh, I know how it feels to read through a thread and think "I want to do that!" as that's how I ended up here too >_<. It's by no means perfect, but it will do the job well I think :D.

Oh I've been being lazy! Also been cracking on with some work for Uni and stuff.

If I end up getting new ones I'll ook in to it. These speakers have been sitting around in my house for 3 years now, along with an amp and a 12" sub. I'm only short a head unit, but I already know which I want:

Hi Deathrow, I've been following your project for quite awhile now and admiring your handywork. I'm especially impressed with the repair sections you've been making.
What red oxide primer are you using? I'm guessing its an aerosol...but which brand? I'm after some myself for my own project.

Thanks,
Tom

Hi Tom, the majority of the red oxide primer I've been using is just from the local halfords, just as it's easy to get hold of, seems to be alright.

Haha, I know what you mean man, I wish I had more time to spend on Elliot and less on Uni work. Sadly I realise I'll miss Uni so much after I finish :). Upside I guess is once I've got a job I'll have cash money to spend on her!

Here's some progress, not alot mind, but hey!

Posted Image
Welds ground down on passenger side, etched and primed.

Posted Image
Same for the driver side.

Posted Image
Fuel tank put in position so I could tack the fuel tank bracket in the correct place.

I just need to weld in the fuel tank bracket now, clean up some welds on the floor and that is the boot finished. I'm aiming to get both outter sills welded on next week before I go back to Uni, that way I've only got to get Elliot painted before I can start putting her back together.

Thanks for looking :P.

i think that you should put some 10" minilites on it,retro bucket seats,mk1 lights and the big over rider bumbers

Aesthetics wise, it's getting some 10x6 wellers (the motorsport type), bucket seats, wide arches, slammed, maybe a twin exhaust.

But you're thinking in the right direction ;).

Love wellers nice choice :) shall be watching to see how mr mini turns out
plans sound nice :P good luck mate

Thanks ash
