I think the whole paint thing has turned into a massive learning curve for both Adam and me as our projects (well my sons Project) were running side by side for some time. I learnt the hard and expensive way about paint reaction and the pitfalls of using different primers and paints. 40+ hours spent in the paint shop stripping back paint i had applied to stop further reaction.

Lesson learnt?? you bet.

now then, with regards the paint thing. my RSP had a total respray in 2008, so now im about to go in for another one, after much rust fixing etc. will this be something I have to think about ??

Bit of progress from today, still just fumbling along with my filler work but I'm getting better at it.

Posted Image
Still more to do here.

Posted Image
Tapped down some high spots in the valance.

Posted Image
The other side definitely needed more work.

Posted Image
Sanded down the door step.

Posted Image
Another skim applied here.

Posted Image
And on the door step.

Posted Image
And the other side of the valance.

Posted Image
And the corner of the rear panel.

Posted Image
Got this bit nice and smooth.

Posted Image
Sanded back the top of the rear quarter too.

Posted Image
Paint applied for protection.

Posted Image
Used the DA on the boot lid.

Posted Image
I really love this distressed look.

Posted Image
I'm not sure whether to weld these up or just place a blob of fiberglass on the back and fill over them. I want to smooth the badge off but I wonder if the fiberglass would make it easier to reverse in the future if I change my mind.

Posted Image
Popped the arch on for a little bit of inspiration.

Posted Image
And another, she's going to look good.

More progress tomorrow hopefully.

Thanks for looking :-).

I would go for the weld method Adam rather than fibreglass. you could if you want to re drill the holes in the bonnet.

Didn't have chance to post an update last night, it was a pretty long day with working on the Mini and then driving back home ready for work today. Nothing exciting again but here we go:

Posted Image
Door step smoothed out and top coated for protection.

Posted Image
Finished off the bottom corner of the rear panel.

Posted Image
Finished off the right hand side of the rear valance.

Posted Image
Overall view of the rear. This is ready to be rubbed down, primed and painted now.

While I was waiting for the filler to go off I turned my attention to the top dash rail. I had made a right mess when removing the padded dash rail earlier on and since the dash rail is being left as just metal I wanted to clean it up.

Posted Image
It's hard to see but the metal is all distorted and messy.

Posted Image
Flanges removed as they won't be needed. I dressed the distorted steel as best I could with the limited access underneath, it's quite close to being flat. I ran the DA over it and you can see the low spots where the paint hasn't been removed properly.

Posted Image
Same treatment for the passenger side mounting hole.

Posted Image
And again for the driver side.

Posted Image
I resisted the urge to just cut a piece off the end of my steel rule for the patch panel.

Posted Image
Made a patch piece in mild steel instead. It's still a little bit too big but it was home time.

A little bit more fettling and that piece will be ready to weld in. I still need to make some little circles to fill in the mounting holes at either end. I'll do the welding once I've turned the car around and I can get the nose out of the garage. Once done it should only need a light skim of filler and the dash rail will be nice and smooth for paint.

More next weekend!

Thanks for looking :-).
