Excuse my ignorance, but why would you want to do this? What are the benefits?

its really for racing, and ground clearance

i cant see why its for ground clearance, the gear linkage is higher than the floor of the car!

when i first met him over a year ago, rich told me that the reason for the internal gear linkage, was so that with the exhaust tunnel free you could tuck the exhaust up inside the tunnel more, thus increasing ground clearence on super low cars!
makes sense really, as the exhaust doesnt exactly sit inside the tunnel, because its filled by the shifter!

Yeah its to allow the exhaust to be moved higher up. Either to lower the car, or on rally cars to allow a protective shielding plate to cover the tunnel from underneath...
Advantages for street use? Erm.... Looks cool:) Oh also if you bring it high enough and trim the gear stick accordingly, it'll seem like you have a much shorter throw shifter

Mine is been done because i've fitted a race seat lower and further back to lower the centre of gravity, with the seat been moved back i can no longer reach the stick, so it is been moved back and closer to the seat

if you want a longer gear linkage there's a lot of A series powered cars you can get them from, i think the metro one is longer, the allegro is, so's the austin 1300 range, and from memory the maxi/ princess one will fit, but its very long!
on my jem i cut and welded 2 mini linkages together to get the right length, and because you sit right on the floor i had to cut out a load of metal from the gear stick, so my gearstick is only about 5" long now......no need for quickshifts now either!
