Hi I am off to New Zealand in September for a year but when I leave I don't want to sell my Mini. So my Dad has agreed that I can keep it at home but he wants me to build a garage extension to keep it in. It needs to be built out of timber as then we won't need planning permission as it can be classed as a car port from what I have been told.

I will be extending the garage backwards to make a longer garage that is single width. The garage is currently 20 feet long. The extension will be approximately 15 feet long and 11 feet wide. I seem to be able to remember a similar topic to this not so long ago and was wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction? I have done a search but couldn't find the topic I am looking for.

I have been told that one side will need to be removeable to allow for the car to be parked in sideways on so that he can fit the triumph in behind it and still have space to work. And the removeable side should also have a door and a window in.

If anyone has any ideas they would be much appreciated

Thanks,
Dan

It all depends on what has been done to the rest of the house, and where the garage is in relation to the road.If the existing garage was built without planning permission, but under"permitted developement rights",then the total size of both old and new extension must not exceed 70 cubic metres,be no more than 4m tall at the highest point and be no closer to the road than the house.Judging by your dimensions, the 70m may well be exceeded. As for a timber structure needing planning permission,it all depends upon your local councils policies.I needed permission for a fully open car port at my old house as it was clearly visible from the road and impacted upon the street scene.Best bet is to take some pics,do a sketch and ask at the planning department of your local council. They are usually keen to help and will give you an answer there and then.

Thanks for the reply. It won't be in view from the road as the garage is down the side of the house and set back around 5meters from the back of the house.

As it won't be a permanent structure I didnt think it would need planning permission as we would be able to take it down and it wouldnt effect the existing garage (was built when the house was built). Will be having a garage door on either end of the existing garage to allow a car to be driven straight through into the 'extension.

Will get a design drawn up and see about contacting local planning department on monday just to confirm planning permission isn't needed.
