Driving to work this morning, as I moved off from being parked, I heard a crunchy-kinda noise, and all the way to work the steering was a bit... waywawd? It did drive straight and true, but didn't feel it.
Got to work and as I turned right, heard and felt and click from the inside front corner. Had a walk around - the front-left tyre has some mild abrasion/scoring on the outside edge, as if it's been in contact with the inner arch lip whilst in motion. However stationary, there's a good (normal) couple of inches gap.
Any idea what's going on?

Check subframe mounts. check for any signs of cracked metal around the subframe mounts, also the inner wing near the shock mounts check this area.
steering tie rod bushes
Have you fitted new wheels and tyres recently ??
put some weight on the corner with the rubbing with the wheel turned in that direction see if theres any chance its rubbing then. remember suspension goes up and down so just cause it doesn't catch at standstill doesn't mean it won't went travelling.

Well the good news is that it was nothing 'serious' (per se). Bad news is what had actually happened.
Turned out that the cause of the tyre abrasion was that it had been rubbing on the front under-lip under the arch.
Top balljoint nut had managed to completely unscrew itself from the lockwasher - the moment I jacked the front up, the hub & wheel just dropped. Very disconcerning in retrospect.
Any suggestions as to why it happened?
