Right ive asked bout this in my other topic called 'yay or nay' in the styling section but thought it would be better suited to ask it in here. Basically im after spraying my car ST orange colour or otherwise know as Electric Orange paint code 6FSE.

My questions which i would like answering is what kind of paint is this, i cant seem to get a proper answer on the web as some people say its just a basecoat but some say its a pearl??I would of thought it was a pearl because of how it looks in the sunlight but i maybe wrong.
My other question is what are the procedures for painting this colour ive read somewhere that its a 3 stage pearl but dont have a clue what that means so would like to find out

Cheers for your help
Adam

If your going for a colour like that go to a spray shop and get it done, its the only way its gonna turn out right.
My mate got his old fiesta done in ST orange and the paint alone cost an arm and a leg.

The ST orange has been copied now so many times if you want the car to stand out try having a metal flake paint job.

And for some reason on Fords site they say the orange is metallic

Definately not a colour you want to be doing on your own.

Something like that really needs leaving to the pro's, and its likely to cost. Alot.

Right ive just spoke to my local paint shop regarding the cost of the paint and what the process is in painting it.

Start off with primer as usual, then apply a brown groundcoat, then apply the electric orange paint and then the clear...He has a full list of instructions on the procedure of spraying it which he will give to me, to pass onto my mate who will be spraying it for me in his booth in his garage, he says if you follow the steps closely it isnt as hard as people make out.

The cost overall he has said about £230 (without VAT as we are talking pound notes here ) this includes 5 litres of the brown groundcoat and then 3 litres of the electric orange and a 5 litre clearcoat kit.

Andrew1408, i know the orange has been used a few times but im adding a twist with a black roof with carbon arches, bootlid and mirrors so will look trick in my eyes but others maybe of another oppinion than my own.

Don't do it! Ford have stopped producing cars in that colour because of the amount of hassle it causes. It is impossible to colour match, so if you get a chip anywhere you have to respray the whole car if you want an unnoticeable repair. I was asked to re-paint a stonechip in the bonnet of an ST, I sprayed out lots different spray out cards, using the formulations from 3 different manufacturers schemes, using differing amounts of coats of basecoat on each one, must have had about six for each shade of each colour. Not one was a good enough match to edge to edge, and as the colour is a 2 stage pearl you can't blend it, therefore the only option was a touch up, or a full respray. Not only do they not produce the cars in that colour any more, you will have problems with insurance if you inform them of the colour, as it costs so much to repair if you claim.

I would suggest finding a similar 1 stage pearl or metallic orange, there is a colour used on Kawasaki's that is very similar, but is simply just a basecoat pearl. I don't know the code, but you could get it off a Kawasaki dealer.

I hope that makes sense, just got back from the pub.

Thanks very much for your input PBP as always your knowledge guides us, i understand where your coming from regarding the paint, but ive had problems colour matching before even when i have the mix formulation still too hand it still doesnt match up correctly.

I really do like that colour and i have my heart set on it, im willing to put the extra work in to get it right and im willing to take the risk, if needs be I can easily respray the car a few years down the line if the paintwork becomes bad.

i work for a Ford referb center. and if you got to ford.co.uk and configure a new one there is the choice of the electric orange.

edit: i think electric orange is a new colour the supersedes the previous colour (of which the name i cant remember) this might also be why electric orange is now branded a metalic not the previous pearl. can find out paint codes and colour history using Ford Etis when i get back from holiday if needed.

Ah right, that would make sense. I believe Nissan used a similar 2 stage pearl, and have also stopped using it for the same reasons.

i'm not 100% but i think due to high warranty costs ford were forced to change the nature of the paint. the original ST orange was a pearl but i think it has been changed on later models to what they will call a metalic. the colour still looks the same but is applied differently.

i will have to check when i get back to work, so i'm open to being proven wrong.
