I put my black and silver plates on late June 2012. Yesterday I got pulled over because of them. He said he'd seen me about but hadn't had chance to stop me until now. On the spot £60 fine and change them immediately. Ash hole

Yes, god forbid a police officer enforcing the law! You knew it was illegal and moan when you get fined. If you don't want to pay the fine, don't do it

I have a few classic cars. The black number plates run with the free road tax, i.e: pre 1971 is ok for black plates, anything later is the modern ones I'm afraid.

I don't think I'll be running the risk but maybe somebody can clear this law up for me. It just seems pathetic. If cars pre '71 are okay to use them then why are cars post 71 banned from doing so?

If they cause problems with traffic cameras or something then I understand, but surely the pre 71 cars should also be banned from using them.

They do look cool as hell tho :shades:

it's the law and unless you become a MP your unlikely to be able to do anything about it

car's made before this law are aloud to carry on running the black a silver plates in the same way is you don't have to up grade your MK1 to have air bags and a catalytic converter

Yeah, no desire to become an MP. Just wondering what the arguement was for making them illegal.

It was a road-safety requirement from 1973. Safety legislation has never been retrospective which is how some 1920's cars can run with only rear brakes and 1940's cars with semaphore indicators and 1980's cars can run without air bags. I always thought it was from 'M' plates onwards and when I bought my early '73 Innocenti it had, and still has, black & white plates. Even though I now know it's from 1st Jan '73 that reflective plates are needed I've never bothered changing them and I think that as early 'L' plate cars could have black and white/silver plates I'm unlikely to have a problem with them. In most cases even the Old Bill don't know the cut-off date.

before the law changed in 1973 most cars had the coloured Number plates as black and white then looked  old fashioned
