Need to sort out the probs after seeing the doc.

Have gone a bit snap happy with a few questions! (hope photobucket works!)

Guessing im supposed to have a sealing o-ring between the air filter box
Posted Image

What is the biggest thick pipe heading into the carb - is this the breather?
Posted Image

Does this gasket look a bit dodgy?
Posted Image

The intake i have taken off is the big hot air duct on the left, what is the smaller port on the right for
Posted Image

Oil has leaked out of rocker onto engine block which i think has been causing alot of fumes. Gonna get a new gasket tomorrow and some gasket seal.
Posted Image

Far back enough or not?
Posted Image

Looks like a leaky rich exhaust
Posted Image

Abit of topic:-
Dodgy colour on rad
Posted Image

Radioactive antifreeze?
Posted Image

Would this affect the speedo reading as have recently noticed it being ~15% higher than it used to be
Posted Image

What is this for??
Posted Image

Need to take this off to change clutch hose, any ideas as its extremley tight
Posted Image

This snapped off a while ago, not sure what its for, hasnt affected anything
Posted Image

Cheers guys, sorry if its a bit picture intense!

It's the centre exit exhaust at fault, i'll bet money on it, had exactly the same symptoms as you and thought it was the exhaust causing it, as when the windows were opened i could smell exhaust fumes when accelerating, luckily i am able to make my own exhaust systems up so i converted to side exit with a few experiments on tailpipe positioning, the problem has all but vanished and i haven't had a migraine since (crossed fingers) even after doing the riviera run i had no problems. The advice of driving with the fresh air vents open and the windows closed is good as a temporary measure, also make sure all the floor grommets are fitted including the ones in the boot under the battery and, if you have them, the opening rear side window seals are good, basically make sure the car is as sealed from outside as far as is possible, hope this helps as i know how you feel, and it's not nice.

ashtray - aah. ive always thought it looks like a centreboard!

I will seal it off as much as i can for this weekend. Is side exit better because it avoids leaks in the boot area? as surely its actually closer to the windows!!

another cambridge mini i see!

Yup another cambs mini, the side exit has stopped the fumes almost completely, it needs to be as far to the side as possible it seems, probably the aerodynamics of the car cause the fumes to swirl around the back of the car and get sucked up inside wherever there's a hole, but with a side exit they don't get into the air stream behind the car and are left behind whilst driving, works for me anyway !!

You seem to be missing a spacer off the carb to inlet manifold as well....saying that I'm no 100% certain if its needed.

Big pipe is the crank breather pipe, it should come from the cansiter behind engine (rad side) to that port on the carb.

There's no seal on the air filter to carb air intake. just make sure the air box is on straight and tight.

Your tailpipe looks to be as far back as mine, can't say I've noticed a problem with fumes.

Definitly sort the exhaust leaks, pull the joints apart put some exhaust gasket paste round the joint, push back together and retighten the clamps

The snapped wire on the brake reservoir cap is the low fluid warning light switch, won't hurt just means you need to keep an eye on the level rather than a light telling you its low.

On the clutch if you mean the small union on the rigid pipe, spray some wd40 on it let it soak in..then really what you need is a special ring spanner with a slot in, an open ended spanner will have a tendancy to slip and round off the flats of the connection.

As far as i can see the spacer is there?? and there should be a flat rubber gasket that fits around the intake on the air filter side, it's very often missing, either from being left out or they perish and drop off on their own!

Look again its missing on his, I've posted a picture of mine to show what it looks like, green arrow pointing to it..

Stand corrected on the seal on the air intake, like you say must be missing on mine as well then, never had one, my sisters not got one either

I stand corrected, ha ha, i was looking at your pic, no wonder i couldn't see anything missing!!!!! Looking back it does appear to not have one, unless it's some sort of aftermarket inlet?? hard to tell, need a pic like yours.

Anyway, i really don't think it'll be causing the original problem, still think it's a combination of centre exit exhaust and maybe a seal leak on the body somewhere.
