The bores need honing, you can do it yourself as the tool isn't that expensive and it fits on an electric drill.

At a minimum, your bores need de-glazing ( which is what you do with an electric drill and a de-glazer ) honing is done on a precision piece of equipment.

Halfords / Machine mart etc etc, it's like a three legged thing with abrasive scrapers on each leg.

I've always called what you call de-glazing as honing as it uses honing stones which are just whetstones to rough up the bores, what you are describing sounds more like a rebore :closed:

This is the tool I am on about http://cgi.ebay.co.u...Q2em118Q2el1247

HI
how can you tell you will get away with just honing and/or degazing rather than a rebore ?

my mg metro engine is blowing quite a lot of soot and i am stripping it down with a view to rebore / fit new rings .

if i can get away with just deglazing and re-ringing the pistons i will be happy ,does anyone know how much wear is acceptable and still get away with new rings , i can measure the bores very accurately with the correct bore comparitor /check for out of round etc .
i know if there is a ridge at the top of the bores ,it is a good indication of bore wear i am looking for actual measurements

use a grape honer and read the instructions. you have measured the bores with a micrometer and checked to see if they are round? if all thats ok you can hone with the grape honer the bores lightly this allows the rings to bed in to the bores. use cheap non synth oil as well to bed in.
