the best is to take to a machine shop as the pockets need to be exact for the same compressions!

if you have to do it yourself then a pillar drill is the best and steadiest way to work away at it....

oh and by the way i'm not sure they really do "need" to be exact. You only cut away roughly 1cc out of the block so say you have a 30% variation on 1cc, they maximum difference is 0.6cc in a combustion chamber roughly 20cc big? 3% variation in compression values, on anything other than a very highly tuned and perfectly setup engine, it will make no odds.

please feel free to reason with me being wrong but the above makes sense to me

Do it,

I've done it several times, just get them as near as you can.
Carbon build up is never even on all four and that dosn't affect balance/performance to any degree so keeping cc's even is not that crucial.

I'll bet your not more than a few per cent out if you measure depth and copy the shape on all four

yep im gona give it a go, got a die grinder then il have to polish it up i think.

any ideas on the best way to measure where to cut, i can only thing of lining the head up with the exhaust valves in, but engineers blue ink on the valva faces and push them down to touch the block (thats if they do)

anyone got any other ideas?

oh and just out of intrest whats a rouch price on getting someone to do it properly?

thanks, dan

yeah engineers blue on the valves, push them onto the block, that will show where the pockets need to be

hi mate i did have someone say it would be about £120, but i did mine myself. painted the valve put the head on and let them drop on to the block gave them a little turn just to make sure they marked the block and i cut out just a little more then was marked to about 3mm deep. i now race the engine most weekends with 1.5 rockers and std cam screaming for about 4 laps in secound and never touching the block or missing a heartbeat
take a look here its the car in front

Yeah i'm thinking about doing this to mine. Just wondering if a 940 head will give better performance than a 12G295...

i have run both on an 1098 in the past year on nearly the same engine the 12g295 on the old 1098 and the 12g940 on the rebuilt engine and i find it better with the 12g940 then the 12g295. it has a lot more grunt

Yeah that sounds good. I'd love a 12G295 head but they're hard to find in good nick. Whereas 940 heads are everywhere for like £20

Well I pocketed the block on my first mini, with the engine in, using a Woolworths die grinder  I blocked off the bores and any holes with oily rags and ducktape. I measured each pocket to make sure they were the same size. Never got to drive it on the road, but it seemed fine.

nice looking bit of work pitty you have never run it to see how it goes.

Hi,

I've got a PDF at home that has a full engineering diagram of dimensions regarding the pockets. Not done it myself yet but once I get my hands on a head I'm gonna give it a go.

I'll post it tomorrow when i get home and I've had a sleep.

Matt
