Hi guys,
I bought some disc brakes recently and the cv joint seems to be broken and seperated to where it joins the "drive shaft" i think thats what its called.
Anyway i want to see what the problem is but im tryin to seperate the rotor from the hub( is this the right way of going about it?) and i have got to a bolt that is too big for my socket set or spanner set. I was wondering if this is a 1 1/2 inch like the flywheel bolt? If not does anyone know what size it is to get it off?

PS here is what im talkin about u can see when picking it up its totally stretching as its not attached..

Much appreciated

To see inside there you don't actually need to remove the castle nut, disc or anything.

Just snip off the little white coloured tie-wrap at the thin end of the CV boot (the flexible rubber thing) and the driveshaft will come free. You'll then be able to see if the shaft has actually broken or if the spline has simply come out the CV joint.

If its the former then you will need to replace the driveshaft and CV joint (unless you can extract the broken section from the CV) - which will entail removing the castle nut and disc.

However if its the latter (which is more likely), then all you'll need to do is get hold of a new spring clip (about 25p), and pop the driveshaft into place in the CV, making sure the splines are in good condition and that there's the right amount of CV grease in there. Fit a new tie-wrap to the CV and driveshaft ends of the CV boot and you're sorted :D

It's just a push fit, makes sure that split ring retainer is free to compress in to the groove on the shaft. Put some grease on the taper around the hole the shaft fits in, it may need a hammer tap to get the shaft in - don't dent the other end if it has the pot joint inner still attached.

in the groove thats 5-10mm from the end of the shaft there should be a "C" clip that will retain the shaft in the CV joint

it will be worth removing the gaiter from the cv joint and cleaning all the grease out incase the original clip has broken and is still inside the joint

If I'm replacing the CV boots, can I use strong cable ties or do they need to be the steel ring sort which was on originally?

Of course you can use cable ties most boots come with them these days anyway just make sure that they don't rub inside the hub
also make sure you use the right grease that comes with the new boots (graphite or moly)

It will probably (almost certainly) be 1 5/16" (inch and five sixteenths) which is the originally designed size, however some later cars and replacement CVs were 34mm.

1 5/16" is same as steering wheel nut & subframe tower bolts (on single bolt subbys).
