When I cut the bins out of a previous Mini I noticed the B-pillars didn't reach the top of the inner sills so made a triangular gusset to bridge the gap. You could always lighten the gusset with your favourite hole-saw!

Thats exactly what I planned to do, but I was actually melting inside the car at the weekend grinding & welding, so said sod it and went inside for a beer!
Will go out again in a bit and see what else I can come up with. Been working in a factory roof void today - above the ovens!! so nothing can be as hot as that!
