I'll torque up to 225NM and then some extra bit to align the hole with the castle nut. If it's aligned at 225NM then I'll tighten up to the next hole. Surely that would take it closer to 262NM.

The CVs I got from the local supplier have a 32mm nut which is annoying because I bought a 34mm for the nut that came off.

Those are a non-genuine after market version. They have metric nuts and a metric thread. They are a lower spec. item than the later factory types and generally only torqued to 150 lb/ft, then on to the next slot.

Thanks for that. These were the only ones supplied by my regular supplier. They could probably get others in but it'll take weeks to arrive.

I'll use these for now and torque to 207nm and then on to the next hole if necessary to align. Let's see how it goes. Can't be worse than the CV that it's replacing. It was sloppy on the drive shafts with some forward and backward movement, which likely explains the play I felt in the wheel.

I thought the cheaper quality ones came supplied with cable ties for the boots. These have the steel rings that need to special tool to clamp. Also included is the clip on the drive shafts, CV grease and a thick flat washer (so maybe there's another car that also uses this CV) ... The tapered split washer is a perfect fit onto the CV.

The CVs I have are GSP brand, supplied by their South African agent who also supply this brand for many other vehicles.

Seems good quality, boot seems good, metal ring clips, even the installation booklet seems good... :P

I tightened up the nut to 205nm and the split pin hole is pretty far off from alignment, like halfway between castle nut slots. Tightening up to 210nm didn't seem to make much difference. I believe these can go to around 244nm if the material used to manufacture them is more similar to the original spec material. I wonder though whether just tightening to the next slot for the pin will still be below 244nm. Does it even matter because I've seem people say they just tighten as tight as they can with an extension bar over a powerbar bar.... That seems excessive and I was able to tighten to 210nm with a britool Evt2000a torque wrench with just handbrake up and a rubber mallet in front of the wheel and it got to 210nm without needing additional leverage.

So... How tight is too tight

Perhaps seek GSP's advice on the torque setting.

Normally, the figure's given are the minimum setting, that's why they state (to the effect of) " Torque to xxx, then continue to tight to align the nut slot to the pin hole ".

Once you reach torque, put the torque wrench down and pick up the gorilla bar.

Minispares sell them now BTA249EVO

Shooter

They don't look very substantial.

I tried some MED ones but the quality control was poor, they'd used a blunt cutter to machine the slots so the threads had burrs on them. I ended up sending them back along with some frankly unusable Transtec CV joints. Their attitude was also rubbish.img_5699_1080x1080.jpg?v=1676572873
