And you don't want any special spark plugs, they do nothing more that the standard NGK BPR6ES plugs

Hello,
recently i have rebuild an SPI engine from 1995 with a stage 3 head, 1.5 rockers, k&n replacement filter and RC40 millenium exhaust. the engine starts perfect en is drivable but i think the computer is not giving the correct fuel air ratio.
Is there something i could do or check that you know of ? maybe a higher fuel pressure?
Also i noticed in the intake manifold that there is a narrow part at the end, can this be removed for better performance?

Hi, great thread to read! Now I'm very interested in tuning my spi cooper. Here are the specs for my mini;
Very stock mini... 1994 Cooper - 1275 spi engine, two core rad. K&N conefilter, Standard ECU (10170)
Like others have said, I'll retain the injection system for reliability as it will be used for every day driving. Based on what I have read from this thread, I should do the following, head, cam, and exhaust.
I would be very happy with ~80hp. The plan is to buy a full maniflow system & Swifttune SW5 cam.
However I'm not sure about the head... Do I buy a new one or should I take it to a specialist to have it machined??
Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated!

it would be cheaper to send your head off for the modifications, I can recommend Keith Calver for this kind of work. Send him an email or give him a call tell him what you have and what you want to achieve and he will tell you what is actually possible.
The down side of course is that your car will be without a head for a while, but if your changing the cam then the engine is out of the car a partially stripped for a while anyway.

100 bhp at the flywheel is indeed possible, and very driveble. The SW5 is not the cam to achieve it either. You will need to go to 1380cc at least to get it. Use the Kent 274 or the 274SP cam and then anything goes as regard tuning as you would any engine, whether carb or not.
Lightweight flywheels can be used but will need a crankshaft trigger installed on the pulley and set up correctly. The ECU will have to be replaced with another along with the injector.
A Large bore LCB would be required, but the standard size LCB would suffice if thats all you can afford.
Everything that can be optimised should be, by similar methods as per Visards books.
If its done correctly you will get in the region of 100bhp and 100lbft torque, pull from 1500rpm all the way up to 6800rpm where the ECU cuts out, it will come on the cam and feel very strong from around 3000rpm
Build this on an engine from a carb car and keep the engine number and pin it back on the block when the machining has been done so you can prove its identity and get round any emissions issues, not that there would be, if you build it right. The cat can be retained, but at this level of tune, would be loosing you some power, but not so much you would generaly notice while driving.
100bhp 100lbft is a lot in a Mini and a whole lot of fun
The beauty of that is that you wouldn't need 6800 rpm...5252 will be quite enough ....

How many miles have you put on this motor before going to the rolling road? I was recently reading am article about how some of the new pistons oil rings take an extra bit of mileage to properly bed in. Maybe around 1000 miles. Although 77bhp is very good, you might see a bit more. Again, the max anyone can expect with these is 85bhp. What exhaust are you running?

I've just left my 1995 SPI Mayfair with The Mini Hospital in Northampton to have the engine rebuilt and bored out to 1293cc. It hit 82k miles and its been super reliable but I want an engine to match the looks of the car after having it restored and going down to 10" wheels. As with most, I want reliability so I'll retain the injection and I was thinking of the SW5 cam but there are positive and negative comments on here about them. I want something quick but not at the expense of something that doesn't idle properly and gives me reliability issues. Also, not sure about the head. Might save to get that done a bit further down the line. Any views? I'm not mechanically minded so apologies
