Just had my chips and popped back into the garage for a look.

I am really happy with it, there are 2 small runs in the laquer, but these should easily flat out.

All I've got to do now is put him back together!!

When hes back together I will post some pics in his project thread.

Hi all just been having a read of this...... i know its a bit of a old topic but i was wondering how much will the time of year effect how the paint drys, i asume at this time of year waterbase is a nightmare,

Also is solvent based still avalible?

Alot of places are still supplying solvent.

Ive found its air flow that dries waterbase.

A hot booth with no air flow wont dry it as quick as a cool booth with lots of flow.

A hot booth with lots a flow being the best.

Hmm, well this story didn't end there


The colour match was carp so I decided to paint the whole car.

A mate knew a place would still supply 2k paint so I decided to go with that(plus it was cheaper!!)

Anyway, this happened






Oooof!!

I don't what caused this reaction, the 2k laquer didn't react in the same way.

I left it for 2 weeks before repainting so it had time to go off.

Once I barcoated it the 2k went on ok.

Next car I do will be bar-coated, no questions!!!

Back to actually putting the waterbased on the car in my domestic garage.

to be honest, it wasn't that tricky, the paint went off in about an hour, having the garage door ajar helped.

I'd like to have another go at it, just need the nerve!!

I think knowing what I know now -

1/ Bar coat first

2/ Ensure My prep is better!!

3/ Don't bother trying to edge match old paint, there's no chance of it matching!!

If anyone else wants to try this and drop me a PM feel free

It is more than possible at home, it just takes a LOT longer!!

Leaving the basecoat overnight is a good idea as well.

Note sure yet to be honnest, just want to do some practice on a old bonnet ive got to start off with and some other old pannels.

Eventualy maybe the front end of my car.

Problem with a solvent paint is im not sure if my compressor would be up to running a air fed mask as well as the gun, will have to checkout the specs.

Yeah painting with water borne paint at home is fine as said its just a case of time to allow the water to evaporate.

i dont see what all the fuss is about with water base
u dont really need a heater to blow warm air on it to cure it
it can be done in a front garden with some good weather

these projects where done in my front garden











the bugs are a night mare but just pick them out

What did you use for face mask and air breathing apparatus while you were spraying the 2K clear coat ??
