I'm looking to install a pair of air vents into the face of my centre console (from Custom Consoles). The face is MDF and about 2cm thick. My question is, how would I go about locking the air vent in place after cutting the holes for them. They twist and lock into the standard Rover dashboard but I can't see how to do this when the console face is 2cm thick. How do Custom Consoles install theirs, I assume they use the same size and shape face but just cut a hole for the vent.

I normally route a rebate around the back of the airvent hole as in this picture.

Failing that if you have a sharp chisel, mark where the three lugs on the vents are and chisel three channels in the reverse of your centre console panel. Taking care to not go all the way through.

Or...

Phone Custom Consoles and ask them to send you a front panel that's already drilled and fitted out. I thought all of their consoles had vents in already. They modify the vent assembly by chopping the back to fit around the heater box and trap the air properly and importantly thay already know how to cut it right first time. You may wreck a couple of vents experimenting to find the right cut so in the long run the best thing might be to just call them.

I bought the console without the air vents as it was a lot cheaper, intending to buy and install the air vents myself.
