Hi All,
I'm running a Hif 44 carb on a water heated inlet manifold.
I would like to know if a standard air filter box from a cooper carb would fit properly regarding the fitting angle etc. I have seen a pic of such an airbox and notice that there is a plastic intake duct kinda thing that fits along the front of the engine -would one fit OK?
I thought that if the angle of my inlet manifold is different to the standard one then it won't fit.
Cheers,
Spud.

you may get away with it as the bit where the "trunk" joins on is separate and can be twisted to any angle. the trunk just fits on the rocker cover bolts
to be honest they are a bit restrictive and hard to find.
they were not designed for performance, they were designed to keep the car running well when its cold and keep the noise down. its a bit of a bodge design really. the thermostatic valve needs to come out to the right for clearance and hot air but then the trunk needs to head back to the left side of the engine bay to pick up the cooler air.
all a bit over engineered if you ask me, i only stick with them because they are standard

you can see the box in this pic without the thermostat section (the trunk has been trimmed as well) dont worry, i didn't leave it like this, this was a quick fix to get the box on with the new engine steady in the way

he's now fitted with a normal city/Mayfair air box but I'm going to have to re-think it as I'm not happy with it not being "standard"

i didn't like the look of mine and thought it looked very restrictive as well
i replaced my air box with a K&N filter

When i changed the inlet manifold on mine to a water cooled one, the angle that it but the carb at was too high for the standard box to fit, as it fouled on the underneath of the scuttle and the bulkhead. I'm now running with a cone filter, and it all fits fine.

Thanks very much for all the replies everyone!!
I have got an air filter box from a 998 ('92 model) and would like to know if it would fit on my HIF44 if I could get hold of a carb elbow to suit. It does fit under the scuttle panel edge etc.I don't know if there is a different air filter box for the larger carb.
Finally, might there be a better looking air box than the old style round one that I have? I remember reading a post that maybe the late 1275's fitted to non cooper carb models might look a tad better. What about metro ones?
I have at the moment got an old K&N fitted but it is just too noisy otherwise I would have just got a new one!!
Cheers,
Spud.

yes the later car box does look better than the old ones.
they were fitted to cars like the open classic LE.
I'm looking for one of these as well so if you find a couple, let me know

Do you have any links to any pics ?
Are there any metro ones that are similar?
Cheers,
Mark.
