Have you followed the instructions in the Haynes Book of Lies, if you have removed the centre nut then the torque converter needs turning so the timing marks on the crankshaft pulley are in the 3 o'clock position then you need to use a puller to be able to remove the converter from its taper
What do you mean by a puller what sort? Dont have a haynes

According to haynes its a special tool with the number 18G1086, I don't think its the same as a standard flywheel puller but I haven't had to do the job yet so maybe someone with an experience of removing one might be along soon to give you some advice.

As for manuals, forget the Haynes because the latest one is useless for the auto (actually it's pretty useless in general). If you can get the older Haynes (called an owners workshop manual not a service and repair manual and paler in colour) second hand that would be OK but for the auto the best thing is to get the genuine Rover manual from Mini Spares or another Mini specialist.
<<edit>>
I've looked around and the flywheel puller sold by Mini Spares may work, the pulling bolts are mounted in slots in this version and so have some position adjustment. Phone Mini Spares and ask them.
