Miglia's are really another kettle of fish, high spec engines, run for much smaller periods of time, with usually much more modification in regard to cooling.
I wouldn't advise anyone not to run with one on a road car, without fitting a blanking sleeve

Sprocket! Waitaminute... What temp is SUPPOSED to be in an SPi or MPi? I posted a thread about my engine never warming up, and I replaced the stuck-open thermostat with a 71C/160F one!

Miniboo - another source told me that the 71C one was 'standard' for Mini's. However, I don't know how accurate that is now..

no i think 71 is way too cold to be honest 88 is standard according to Haynes.

pre 1976:

standard=82

hot climates=74

cold climates=88

post 1976:

Standard=88

I use the 74deg. thermostat because of the hot climate over here. I have a question, though, is it true that you have to drill holes in the thermo if you're using the waterpump/head without bypass hose? Or is it okay to fit the thermo as it is? Thanks, and sorry to hijack your thread, miniboo...

Someone may correct me if I'm wrong - but I believe that you DO need to drill small holes. Otherwise, the thermostat won't ever warm up properly (on the back-side, the side with the spring) and never open.

Thanks for the info on the temps. That could be why I'm never getting a hot engine. :thumbsup: Luckily I have a 80C/180F backup at home, I'll slip that in tonight. :ph34r:

I use an 88 deg 'stat in sunny Venezuela.

Although with some variables in the cooling system:
- 88 stat with 6 1/8" holes around. [Can't get mini parts here but a stat from a blazer 96-99 (54mm diameter) does the trick]
- Got rid of the by-pass hose.
- Since i don't run a heater, run a pipe from the heater take off to the top hose or in my case to the spacer plate between the head and the stat housing. (old plan pic below, will add new one soon)
Posted Image
- Added aux fan with thermo-switch @ 92 on and 86 off.

Even in the hot days, and believe me it gets hot here, it will sit about 1mm below the middle line in the temp gauge.

So I'd say yeah, 88 degrees is the way to go.

Cheers

EDIT: mine is a 93 carb Mini Cord
EDIT: the spacer came standard in minis with A/C however i'm sure the so called "sandwich plate" that minispares sales will be fine, or you could fabricate one.

The Injection engines need the 88 stat otherwise the ECU will keep the engine running in cold start, and run rich all the time.

Well, d'oh. Thanks for that. I hope my oxygen sensor isn't toast now, with it running cold not only through MY ownership, but the previous owner's.. Ouch.

erm which fan? if it is the one to the left of the rad then it is always on as it is driven by the engine. if ti is a leccy one on the inner wing then yeah you may have a dodgy switch for it. this does NOTY mean the thermostat in the head is dodgy. if it is a newer mini then it will be the thermostatic switch at the bottom of the radiator. it normally kicks in at about 91 deg c i think(might be 94) so it should vary rarley be on.
