I wouldn't advise anyone not to run with one on a road car, without fitting a blanking sleeve

Ive got alarm bells ringing i been running mine with out a thermo for ayear and had it getting really hot at high rev'sMiglia's are really another kettle of fish, high spec engines, run for much smaller periods of time, with usually much more modification in regard to cooling.

Miniboo - another source told me that the 71C one was 'standard' for Mini's. However, I don't know how accurate that is now..

Someone may correct me if I'm wrong - but I believe that you DO need to drill small holes. Otherwise, the thermostat won't ever warm up properly (on the back-side, the side with the spring) and never open.I use the 74deg. thermostat because of the hot climate over here. I have a question, though, is it true that you have to drill holes in the thermo if you're using the waterpump/head without bypass hose? Or is it okay to fit the thermo as it is? Thanks, and sorry to hijack your thread, miniboo...
Thanks for the info on the temps. That could be why I'm never getting a hot engine.

Although with some variables in the cooling system:
- 88 stat with 6 1/8" holes around. [Can't get mini parts here but a stat from a blazer 96-99 (54mm diameter) does the trick]
- Got rid of the by-pass hose.
- Since i don't run a heater, run a pipe from the heater take off to the top hose or in my case to the spacer plate between the head and the stat housing. (old plan pic below, will add new one soon)

- Added aux fan with thermo-switch @ 92 on and 86 off.
Even in the hot days, and believe me it gets hot here, it will sit about 1mm below the middle line in the temp gauge.
So I'd say yeah, 88 degrees is the way to go.
Cheers
EDIT: mine is a 93 carb Mini Cord
EDIT: the spacer came standard in minis with A/C however i'm sure the so called "sandwich plate" that minispares sales will be fine, or you could fabricate one.

The Injection engines need the 88 stat otherwise the ECU will keep the engine running in cold start, and run rich all the time.
Well, d'oh. Thanks for that. I hope my oxygen sensor isn't toast now, with it running cold not only through MY ownership, but the previous owner's.. Ouch.
