I'm not 1200% sure what revision of HS would be on a 79gt if the float lid has 2 pipes the one that isn't connected to the fuel line is the vent, if there's only one pipe the vent is hiding behind a little steel cover plate on the sticky up bit the fuel line goes in to. I guess you've checked and adjusted the float valve?

It's an SU HS4 carb, Eff. So the vent is behind the baffle plate? That should be clear now, I reckon.

What's this about the float valve? :dontgetit: What have I missed?

juju I'm sure the haynes manual tells you how to adjust the float chamber. it the needle valve that let the fuel into the float chamber clear? I had a crysalis in mine once, no idea how it got there though, can't imagine a caterpillar wanting to be reincarnated in a fuel system?

A chrysalis?! :(

I'll whip it off again this evening, and have a shufty. Thanks Leonard. :D

Actually, I might as well start whipping everything off now ready for his new floor pan & respray. :(

I wasn't going to. I learnt my lesson from hot-air-gun stripping all the doors in my house in the back garden dressed only in a bikini. >_< Jesus H. ********, those scabby curls of paint can get fackin' hot! :ohno: ;)

I dunno. Tell me more, Leonard........... :)

Right, back on topic:

Last Night

1. Took carburettor apart again.

2. The float chamber had petrol in it.

3. The jet was clear - Juju pretends to play Bolivian pan-pipes on Tommy's bits.... :teehee:

4. Float chamber valve was very stiff. Pushed in the valve, but couldn't blow through the inlet (no more pan-pipes... )

5. The little bit of plastic preventing the float from swinging all the way back was also missing. :errr:

6. Replaced float chamber lid completely & stuck the whole assembly back in, along with replacement fuel hose from pump to carb.

7. Bung battery booster in boot & turn engine over.............

Tommy says "Pop-pop-pop-Vrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrmmm-Vrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrm-VRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRMMM"

:w00t:

JUJU ELATED!!

.......'til she realises there's fuel p*ssing everywhere from the new hose & alarmingly-glowy-looking-orange-bits sitting on the manifold next to the rapidly spreading lake of superunleaded. >_<

Methinks is best if Tommy not run until I've attached a few more clips.

Thanks for your help again, you gorgeous Lovelies!!

Well I haven't seen Tommy The GT (or Matilda The Cooper) for a fortnight now. ^_^ ^_^

However, two weeks ago I put another gasket in the float chamber & bunged on a few more clips to the fuel hose......

.................and then I got him started & DROVE HIM FOR THE FIRST TIME!!!!.....

...only in first gear & a bit of reverse around the car park.... ...but he still wants to go Vrrrrrmmmm....only he doesn't want to stop.... :ermm:

Engine is great, gearbox feels fine, I don't thnk there will be any huge nasty surprises when he's all back together, so next time I see him I'm going to start taking him apart. ^_^

Fankoo. He's going to look far worse before he gets better, though....

Yesterday:

Managed to convince Andy to help me out a bit! He likes taking things apart, so that's cool.

Still can't get the bumper & nudgebar off the front. It just will not shift. :mmkay:

We're only succeeding in making the hole in the wing bigger, really. :genius:

He's coming apart slowly.

Posted Image

I'll take out the clocks & dash next week.

He's been struck completely blind now :dontgetit: . Electrics appear to be in good nick. I was expecting to need a new loom, but I don't think it'll be necessary.

Going to have him completely shotblasted. It's expensive (total car budget is now running at 300% of original :) :) :dontgetit: ), but I need to know which panels should be replaced now. I've sourced a few genuine Leyland panels, so we can replace whatever's needed. :P

I can't wait to get the subframes off & engine out to start making it all sexy again!!! :teehee:

The bumper bolts might fre with some 'freeze & release' spray from Halfords or motor factors.

Although it didn't help me! I had a similar problem with my clubby bumpers - the previous owner had forced metric bolts in and there was no way they would shift - they just twisted the brackets. I ended up getting the bolts wound out a little until I could get a hacksaw blade between bumper and car and then cut the bolt. However as you are respraying I would simply grind the head off the bolt from under the wing then tackle the remains once the bumper was off the car (you might find then that the heat from grinding will have freed the threads).
