DaveRob is right, it's called Silicosis and it's a lot like Asbestosis. Silicon miners get it and you can get it from inhaling a lot of sand. Normally you have to inhale an awful lot of silicon or sand for it to damage you but when sand blasting the pressure and sheer density of sand in the air can drive the sand deep into your lung lining and give the same results from a much lower dose. If you are going to use regular sand get yourself a very serious mask, not just a DIY paper dust mask but something that is properly rated. Ideally use a blasting cabinet or an air fed mask. Take care of yourself.

For steel wheels sand is probably better, but for alloys I find sand blasting tends to soften some of the sharper profiles too much.

My old work used a form of bicarbonate of soda, I think the theory was that it would dissolve in water to rinse out of parts?

how much do you think it would cost to sandblast a whole mini???

About £400, but be aware of the cheap places, as they tend to take less care and warp panels. It's safer to only get the interior and the edges and door shuts done, then use paint stripper on the big panels.

to be honest i used to use kiln dried sand from B&Q but i found it that the particles in it were to large and regulary clogged my blaster up, much recently ive been using my local fielden factors and buy a 25KG bag of silica sand which is a much finer grade and very dry so easily comes out of the gun and at 4quid a bag you cant go wrong....

im not sandblasting my whole mini. just my wella wheels because the owner before me hand painted them and there covered in runs,
ive had enough of using nitromores paint stripper stuff. been there dont that. never again

Good luck!!! Weller Wheels are Baked. Therefore sandblasting them will do Sweet Eff All!!

You need to nitromorse the majority of it off then get a wire wheels on it and bring them back to bare metal.
