I have a plan for when i fit my K head but it all depends on the direction of coolant flow and if it is the way i think it is.

has anyone got a good diagram with arrows on or the like?

I think its the following:

Pump pushes water into the block
Water comes out of the top hose and water comes out of the heater take off
Water goes down the radiator and water goes through the heater matrix
Water goes through the bottom hose
Back into the pump
And round and round and round and round etc...

That way the engine is using the *cooler* water from the bottom of the radiator...

Hot water rises so, hot water goes from head to heater and back in at bottom hose.
Water pump pumps water out through thermostat housing and into top of rad where it sinks as it cools and back in through bottom hose.

out the cylinder head
throught the thermostat housing into the rad
into the top hose
out the bottom house
through the water pump and back into the engine.

I couldn't find a diagram when i was fitting a stage one kit and because i put silicon hoses on had to re-route the heater hoses so as they would not kink i am intrigued to know this one as well. It would be nice to know that i've connected everything correctly

ok what about the Bypass then on an older engine? does it go into the head or out of the head?

Out of the head into the pump I think.

Means if you have the heater off, and the engine is cold the water is only circulating the engine until it warms up. Once it warms up the thermostat opens and it starts circulating the radiator the bypass is redundant.

Later engines don't have them, or at least mine doesn't so if the head you are fitting doesn't have a bypass connection, just get a water pump without one and it will be fine.

ahh well i have already bought a pump with one and i reckon there is a way of plumbing it all in to work.

i just couldnt remember if teh bypass let water out oif the head or into the head. Out of th ehead is great for what i want to do.(bmw K100 Head by the way)

The heater just relies on hot water rising out of the head and flowing into heater via heater valve, the cooled water then drops back into the system at the top of the bottom hose.

Later engines have a relief hole in the thermostat instead of a bypass hose.
