Hi All,

What is the difference between Jack Knight Transfer gear sets and Transfer roller kits?? Is there a marked improvement in the roller kits and is it worth forking out the extra cash??

Thanks in advance..

Andy

the roller kits use a tapered bearing which reduces the side load on the soft aluminum cases even further than a std set of SC drops... The is a benefit in cars which are pushed hard, eg competition etc etc

Also don't limit yourself to JKD

guessworks, out of interest, can you explain- i thought the whole idea of s/c drops was to reduce to side load anyway? would it not be an unjustifiable expense?

Guessworks, not wishing to sound naive but what other manufacturers do I have as options for a set of SC drop gears?

Simon@minispares - Am I right in thinking you just by the 3 gears separately in order to make up the kit???

Prices look a lot more affordable that the JK kit.. ;)

Correct. Bear in mind though, there are 2 types of idler gear, the timkin idler and standard straight cut type, and the prices are very different

I still think a Timkin equipped idler to fit standard transfers would be interesting. Any engineers out there got any thoughts on the practicalities of cutting a suitable hole in a gear?

just resurecting this topic, Ive got 1.08 straight cut jack knight drops for my mini with the tapered roller bearing idler. Does anyone know how to set them up, end float, etc etc ?or is it just knock them into the case and off with you !

I did have a set of JKD Drops in my Race Car many many moons ago. I think I obtained them as a used set, but I don't recall doing much more than giving them the 'once over' and fitting them. I think from memory, they used a TR Bearing set but I can't recall how they were set for preloading, I * think * it was by the design of the shaft / axle that had a built in spacer ?

Not Timken, I'm sorry, 40 lashings for that, but a little like this ?

That'd be the very thing

Is it the same from the other side? I'm guessing there's a shoulder left in the middle? Difficult to machine?
