i have a fectel red top fuel pump with a filter king. i connected it to my hif44 and it is leaking fuel everywhere....

You need to check the fuel pressure going to the carb, it should be no more than 4 psi
Where abouts is the fuel coming from?

thinking about it if maybe winding it in gave more pressure?

Plus, I'm sure they're 'factory set' at 3.0 PSI, but should always be checked. Hmmm, Red Top's a bit OTT for a HIF44 anyway aint it?

my mate has a fse one but its for injection and it goes up to about a million so its hard to see on the gauge what the needle is....
oh forgot to say, it starts when i turn the fuel pump off.... must be pressure?

I'm sure it says on the top of Filter Kings which way to turn it. IIRC though, in is to reduce pressure.

a red top should be fine on any engine, the different facet pumps all pump around the same pressure but they have different volumes of fuel they pump, the pumps also pump at a constant rate regardless of RPM so even on a full race engine thats on idle there won't be that much difference in the ammount of fuel used.
It could also be the needle valve in the carb is a bit worn and not sealing properly.

it doesnt say which way to turn it on the regulator either.
i think the red top pumps 7psi. its noisy as too...

if the pump pressure was to much then the pipe joints before the filter kiing would be leaking, have you checked these?
take the carb off or try the one thats off:
empty it of fuel and blow into the 'tube' where the petrol goes in you should find it easy now turn the carb upside down and do the same it shuld now stop blowing through altogether,
if it doesnt the needle valve is too worn / stuck open, the float is misalligned / faulty(maybe leaking), the jet mavbe blocked up.

i have tryed it on two carbs though and its doing the same on both... was told that the one of them had been freshly rebuilt too.

If the carbs have been sitting for a bit, the slightest bit of dirt stick in the needle valve will stop it closing off especialy if the fuel pressure is too high.
try turning it the other way.
Where abouts is the fuel coming out?
Is the car flooding as well?

its coming from the brass needle? around the aluminum cylinder that moves up and down. i turned the pressure down and then pushed the cylinder thing up and it seemed to stop for a little while but then started peeing out again.
its not leaking anywhere but its dangerous as i only just noticed after i sort of got it running and it was backfireing loads. looked under the car and there was a pool of fuel. comes out of the air filter some how...
so tomorow i go and back the pressure off all the way and then turn it up a little by little? am i going to have to buy a gauge to get it to 3 psi?

mine did this when the head gasket blew.....
--------------------------------------------------
the brass needle idside the carb? this is where it should come from? :S
the alumnium cylinder sounds like the jet....that goes down into the float chamber and brings up the fuel
does any fuel come out of the carb?
do you have pictures?

i will get pictures tomorow but it will be hard to see.
i cant see how it would be the carb if it was doing it on both of them? surely not?
thankyou all for your help so far... i know telephone diagnosis's arnt easy but its apriciated
