Generally people advise around a 140amp one, just so then it can take it if you need to weld a subby or anything heavy i'd imagine!

im going to be doing mainly panel work on the body so anymore advice or websites welcomemachine mart do welders for not bad money they will probably be a clark one. Personaly i would use a mig welder with gas i find it alot nicer to work with

For your budget I would also recommend a clarke welder, SIP's are prone to feed probs.
I would include an auto darkening welding helmet in your budget as this will make your life a lot easier!!!
Also, unless you are only going to use it very infrequently it will eat the little cheap gas bottle you get. Far better and cheaper in the long run to get a gas account with some one like BOC, its not as expensive as you think.

really nice welder, and not too hard to setup and use
definately recommend buying a auto-darkening mask, especially if it's your first time, trying to weld one handed when you can't see is a wee bit difficult

i use a 90 amp gassless mig welder and get very good results with it, but splatter can be a problem if the steel is very very very clean it is very minimal, i used it for body panels and the sills to very good effect.
so have i, my gasless mig has been pretty good the whole time, yeah you get some splatter, just grind it back.
