It all depends what your welding i guess! personally i'd opt for a gas welder, just my personal opinion as there is less spatter and the wire is cheaper! of course you then have to buy gas etc :proud:

Generally people advise around a 140amp one, just so then it can take it if you need to weld a subby or anything heavy i'd imagine!

For car body work you need one that will go down to a min of 30amps. Gasless migs are generally considered to be useless!!

For your budget I would also recommend a clarke welder, SIP's are prone to feed probs.

I would include an auto darkening welding helmet in your budget as this will make your life a lot easier!!!

Also, unless you are only going to use it very infrequently it will eat the little cheap gas bottle you get. Far better and cheaper in the long run to get a gas account with some one like BOC, its not as expensive as you think.

i bought a sip one off of ebay 140 amp turbo, £150, dead chuffed with it, first time i welded ever too and its pretty easy, not so easy to make it look good but i figure practice will make better, use it gasless with flux coated wire which i understand is more difficult than with gas but i've found it pretty easy and really enjoy it, also bought a cheapo auto darkening helmet, brilliant, best purchase to date, would deffo recommend it!! also should add that i've never had any problems with it feeding badly(well not since i put the feed wheel up the right way anyway :goaway: )hope this helps a little :proud:

Managed to get a 130amp sealey welder off ebay brand new for £135 with gas bottle, wire, regulator, mask (rubbish, but a mask none-the-less) and spare tips

really nice welder, and not too hard to setup and use

definately recommend buying a auto-darkening mask, especially if it's your first time, trying to weld one handed when you can't see is a wee bit difficult

i use a 90 amp gassless mig welder and get very good results with it, but splatter can be a problem if the steel is very very very clean it is very minimal, i used it for body panels and the sills to very good effect.
